First of all I want to thank "The Runner's High" for sponsoring my "footwear" and "garment" requirements for the 2005 NYC Marathon

I have just received various shoes from Asics, New Balance and Adidas. 8 shoes in all.

Right now I am using a Gel Kayano XI by Asics and I am about to head out for my first run. They were kind enough to supply NIKE's thermal wear, running shorts, tracks, jackets etc.

Im doing my first 5 mile run in more than 12 months and if it goes well then I will try with all the different shoes to find the ones that will feature at the marathon.


Until I received the shipment yesterday I had no idea that there were "special" running socks

These feel awesome and are just short of ankle height.

Just got back from a painful 6 miler, I'm still getting over a pretty bad case of achilles tendonitis.

GS, hope that marathon goes well, make sure you stay consistent with your training! Once I'm done running at the collegiate level, I'm going to give the marathon a try

Running for college, that's very cool. What do you run. My son and daughter on their middle school and high school track teams. You guys are getting me motivated. I think I will head out for a run.

I did the 5 mile but I am out of breath. Made it in a little over 70 minutes which is ok considering the gap (12 months + ) but I made it without feeling out of breath or dizzy which is the important thing...

My goal is to maintain a 10 minute mile through the 26 miles...trying to work on strategy here...

1] steady 10 minute mile
2] faster first 15 miles and slower finish
3] slower start and faster finish

the third options seems to suit my abilities best...

My problem is motivation beyond a certain point. If I am out of breath with a fast start and I still havent seen the 10th mile then my mind wants to stop...regardless of how the body is doing.

This time I will have my uncle with me and beating him is all the motivation I need. I will never be able to show my face to my family if I lose to this 45 year old

Glad to see there are some runners here. I just started running again, and I am preparing for the Indy mini-marathon in May and maybe the Chicago Marathon in Oct. I haven't seriously ran since track and x-country in high school (about 10 years ago), which was painful because of constant shin splints and side stiches. It's much more enjoyable now that I am running virtually injury free after learning about proper running and breathing techniques and gettng the right shoes (Saucony Hurricanes). I highly recommend reading/skimming "The Lore of Running."

BTW, do you guys use headphones while running? It feels weird for me because we weren't allowed to use them during practice in H.S.

Having never heard from «The Runner's High» I found out that their mission is:

Road Race Timing and Computer Scoring,
ChampionChip Timing and Scoring,

So you'll be running with your laptop.....

I was in my past life sponsored by New Balance tennis shoes and I can say , between you and me, that it will snow in Hell before I run in any Adidas products. What a bunch of total jerks.....

So if your willing to do some «humanitarian running», I assume it will be so, dont use Adidas.

I tried IEMs but they tend to amplify footsteps and therefore didnt work out. I sweat profusely so headphones are out of the question too...

Besides - I find music distracting because I make measured steps and control my stride...music tends to throw this out of control

Big guy like you usually dont do that well in long distance running. I hope that your uncle is bigger than you, since many well trainned 45 are able to kick your twenty something butt....

I used to be skinny...um...normal in 2002,2003 and its only after that that I started piling on the pounds.

I run well once my weight is down to 85 kgs or less...You dont wanna know how much I weight right now

But compared to 2 months back - my current weight is acceptable

I've been a runner for 11 years now, I love it. I'm now running 5 miles a day 5 or 6 days a week. It's a major commitment, but it's the best stress reliever I know. It's a pain trying to find shoes that work well for you. Feet are so different and peoples' running style/gait etc. are so different they will react differently to different shoes. I get severe ankle pains with bad shoes. But I've been using the same shoe (Nike Tailwinds) for the last 6 years and they're the best thing for my feet, no more pain. Finding a good shoe is good as gold.

Great timing to find this thread. I just got back from a four mile race not 10 minutes ago. I did alright, about 35 minutes. I'm planning on a 10k next month and hopefully a 1/2 marathon before August. Just starting into this running thing. Been having a blast so far!

And if I may add it cant be done without professionnal supervision. There is out there many highly trainned specialists for that difficult task. If not done properly it will result in long/and short term realy bad surprises.

I have high respect for people who run because most of the time I can only run if there's a ball in front of me, just like baiting a dog. Running for the sole sake of running, every day, requires a discipline, which I have yet to muster. However, there's nothing better than running after many hours of desk work, as if the body is asking for an energy relief. Still, rather with than without a ball.

Well of course the fall brings Cross Country, which is an 8K at my level compared to high school. During indoor and outdoor track (yes, we ran all winter!) I'm more of a mid-distance runner. I'll do anything from the 800 to the 1500. But for outdoor, the 1500 is my event. This year I'm gunning for a 1st place at my Conference meet, which will also get me a ticket to Regionals in sunny Florida

edit: GS, what kind of mileage do you have planned out? High mileage might not be good, but slowly work your way up until you feel comfortable with your weekly mileage. During the fall, I'll do about 80 per week in season, but I drop down to 50-60 for Track.
