Buy before you try  .

I put a pair in my amp with cathode bias and the heaters lit up but the tube didn't draw any current and not a sound. First I waited less than a minute (the power tubes usually start to work within less than tweny seconds). Second try waited one minute. Third try three minutes. Same result.
What causes that? Is it just really low (or in your case no) output? When I looked at the data sheet I didn’t see anything about extended warm up times-

But wouldn’t the effect you describe (low cathode bias) only be limited by the amount of current capable of being provided?

Have to give points for creativity if nothing else. Wonder how it sounds?
It would have been cool if he had the real volume/tone control knobs doing something on top-

I have been telling myself, “No more tubes, no more tubes…” So we all know what that means right? More tubes! Sigh. It was my birthday so I decided to I grab the last tube that had piqued my interest.

I have read that the n78 is a down rated el84. What caught my eye was the fact that they published operating points for my 8k transformers. That and the prospect of hearing a GEC el84, even if it is a little less powerful made me curious. Of course they don’t have the same pin out as the el84 or even the 6gk6 so it’s another adapter. The same adapter can be used for el91 which are even lower powered. If I ever bought some of those they would most likely be used as inputs. Anyway, these came in dull brown boxes with either 1965 or 1966 dates. Also love the little caps for the pins. I’m always worried that they will get bent. They have the oval plates that people like in the el84. I know it’s dangerous to ”drink by label” but I have yet to be disappointed with an MOV/GEC/Marconi/Osram tube.

Well, since I’m ordering from Langrex, might as well buy some other small tubes since the shipping is likely to be the same. I love the 6aq5/el90 tubes I’ve tried so far so these Ericsson 18aq5 caught my eye. Fancy, shiny gold pins and an odd plate structure. We’ll see how these compare to the others.

Happy birthday! You discovered why I had bought EL91 adapters.

If only I knew you were going N78 shopping at Langrex - would've offered to steer you over to the CV4062/A2134 aisle. CV4062 is a successor to the N78 and what I had hoped from a baby EL84 that the N78 didn't deliver in my amps. But, didn't know you were breaking your vow and going shopping. :joy:

Hopefully the N78 will be happier with your 8K traffos. If not... I highly recommend the GEC CV4062 as a sweet sonic vow breaker for little cost.

Update: Langrex is out of CV4062s! I swear I didn't buy their entire inventory. Only a dozen pairs. There's still many on the bay, such as this pair.

So my McChanson UltimatE Headphone amp uses 6V6. 6L6 ,6Y6, KT88,EL34 , etc as power tubes. To use these CV4062's can i use an EL84 To 6V6 adapter ?
Photo just because :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

There's so many golden tones in there... however, the CV4062 has a different pinout to the EL84. Nothing that a quick chat with @Deyan can't remedy.

Huh. They are cheap enough I’ll go ahead and get some. Arghhh! Tube rolling, not even once kids! Question is do I get the ones witch the GEC stickers or save some dough and get the ones without…

I can’t find any info on them, not like the n78 pages at least. Are they run at the same operating points and need the same transformers? The n78 in push pull triode at 300v with a 5k transformer will give you 4.4 watts at 1.4% distortion while running them at 350v with an 8k transformer gives you 6.6 watts at 1.6%. Have to adjust the bias current too of course. I am sure there is a different distortion spectrum at those two operating points and have different sounds. It would be great if I could run the cv4062 At the same settings.

24 tubes? Just to try them out? Good Lord man, I use quads and I typically buy 10-12 at a time. No wonder tubes are disappearing lol.

Where do you put CV2179 in this bunch? I have twelve of these in measured quads with square getters, slightly used i think.

I went with a pair of labeled and a gaggle of unlabeled. No sonic difference. Unless I listen while staring at the historically prestigious GEC logo.

They're very close. Expect any setting used with the N78 will work for the CV4062. While sounding better. YMMV.

However, I wouldn't put 350V into either. These are historically important thermionic artifacts made with great care by skilled artisans over 60 years ago. At least that's what the advert said.

Only started with a pair or so. Then some weeks/days later, spotted a ebay seller offering multiple quads in a number of auctions. Starting bid was very low <$8/quad. Thought someone would get a great deal. But no one was bidding. That's not right. So I put in a starting bid on all of the auctions hoping I'd snag at least a quad. Turns out I snagged all the quads! Now I have @bcowen-esque levels of backups! 🤣
