Frankie 7N7. Same construction as 6SN7W, but deconstructed pricing.

A better 6SN7 might be an early ECC40, foil getter from Eindhoven. Later iterations are less enamouring.

Concur regarding 1578s - enjoy the 50s versions. From the 60s onward they get more V-shaped and harsher.

Have you tried a Brimar CV1988? They used to be the old hotness after the TS RP hotness wore off and before the 1578 hotness began. 🤣
I tried a non-Frankie 7N7 (no wonder why it was so cheap) and it was an awful muddy mess in the Liquid Glass.

Yes, bought a couple of those for mudroom listening purposes.

However, have a Landsdale CBRZ Frankie that is exceptionally clean and detailed. Compares very well to my 6SN7W tall bottle.

Just received a cheap 7AF7... working up the courage to find out where it sits on the sonic mud mat map.

Is it possible that the Lansdale Frankies were made by National Union since Sylvania bought that NU factory?

This is what my research always pointed me to. Landsdale is essentially NU even if Sylvania owned the plant…same factory, equipment, etc.

Spent $700 on a pair from him a couple months ago. Don't regret it at all despite never having spent more than half that on 2 non-300b tubes.
Spent $799 and the last one, 1979 version. Will not be surprised > $1000 next year or even sooner. .... Have couple of Reflektor Holy Grail '75 6N23P SWGP Silver Shields when I did the 6922 rolling 10 years ago. Will dig out for sale to cover the 'loss' ....😀😀 300B and 6sn7 rolling is completely different game.

I had always heard that the Round plate 7n7 were made by NU all the rest were Sylvania.

You are right - I think there was some miscommunication in the original question from @Galapac to @K3cT

I think @Galapac maybe meant to ask about the ECC33?

You are right, I meant ECC33, which I understand needs an adapter to 6SN7.

Not yet for Brimar. How would you say they differ with the GEC / Osram L63? If there is something that I can critique about the L63 is that I could use a more open top end but preferable keeping their mid qualities as much as possible. 😅

Depends on which L63. I haven't found any 6SN7 (have 100+) I prefer to my straight tinted glass Marconi L63. It's my fav Twin. Or they are. Or something. Not that I don't enjoy rolling 6SN7s, but many I could sell on and not cry about. Selling the Marconi Twins would bring tears and years of regret.

My GEC ST grey glass L63s aren't quite as open or as transparent. Nor the GEC clear straight glass L63. I would rate the later two as slightly more open up top than a good CV1988. But in the mids, prefer a good Brimar CV1988 - a bit richer and sweeter.

The Brimar CV1932 appears to have the same round plate as their CV1988 and weirdly enough, to my ears, has that Brimar mid sweetness I find a bit too addictive.

Also this is the 6SN7 thread, and I'm breaking protocol gushing about the Twins. We have the 6J5 (L63, 6C5, 12J5, 6P5, etc.) thread for that sort of unseemly behaviour. 🤣

You need a thousand dollars premium adapter to match with your priceless tubes... :grin::grin:

The ECC83 is NOT a drop in for a 6SN7. An ECC83 is a 12AX7, which has a much higher mu than a 6SN7.
Sorry guys, what's mu? I have a wee collection of 6SN7's and 12AX7's/CV4033/CV4024 and 6N23p's. Obviously the smaller ones would be using an adapter but just checking they'll all be fine in my ordered Tor Audio Nick amp? ie the current required isn't too high for my transformer. I'm guessing the drop in 6SN7's will be fine but not so sure on the others. They worked fine in my schiit lyr 3 without issue, so I'm half assuming they'll be fine in the Tor

Edit: actually they may be 12AU7,will have to check later...
