You got to have rocks in your head to buy those no matter how they sound.
I always wondered where this Italian seller gets their tubes as they always have very interesting and seemingly rare versions of popular tubes.
They usually have many that no one else has.

Sorry if I was unclear… I changed the tubes in my preamp from b36 to 14n7 and left the ecc31 driving 6aq5 in my amp. I had been considering ordering some adapters to allow me to use either 2x 6j5 or 2x 6n7 with paralleled triodes. Won’t have to do that now that I’m getting good sound from the ecc31.

As far as new adapters I will make good on my threat to get 2x triode wired 6v6/6f6/6k6 etc. to 6sn7. Might get yet another output tube adapter as well but still researching that.

Have you tried "6AU6"? （triode connection）

I think that the volume of the mid-low range is rich and the noise performance is excellent.
Few people buy it, so you can get a nos tube for the same price as a "Big Mac hamburger".

Slightly offtopic, but since I see B36 referenced to.... does anyone know of other 12SN7/12SX7/B36 variants, with or without adapters? playing with 12.6v of course

cheap BGRP was definitely something I wanted sometime ago, but I already acquired the 6SN7 variant awhile back ! I think the B36s would be interesting, I don't have many UK stuff onhand

A pair of 12j5 is an excellent choice, and cheap. I love love love the b36 tubes I have but they have gotten really expensive. Speaking of expensive, the 2c50 is also an option as long as you’re willing to give up gain.

I have recently started using triode wired pentodes. A 12j7 in triode is electrically equivalent to a 12v 6c5 which is the same as a 12j5. The Fivre 12j7 is quite good this way. You could also get an adapter for the 6sj7 which is equivalent but without the top cap. I have high hopes for the triode wired Brimar 8d2 tubes. I have them but haven’t gotten a chance to try them yet.

I definitely am not gonna fill up a huge collection of b36, maybe just 1 metal base and 1 gec to compare them against the 6J5s

I know that bargain tubes cannot compare to the GEC et al stuff - I mean, how can a $7 tube compete with the mega$ stuff?
Can’t be…
But maybe? Forget about bragging rights- how can an el cheapo tube sound as good or better than the real exxpenssive stuff?
And it doesn’t even look special- like worker housing in Albania.
And most people won’t believe me (but some do).
