What adapter do I need for the 6S5S? (native 6SN7)
I have 6J5 adapters but haven't checked the pinout for the 6S5S.

Same adapter as 6J5/6C5

Yes 6sn7. I also use 6J5’s with adapters.

Most amp designers design their amps to sound good with any tube. And we ignore them and roll in expensive tubes and go looking for the rare tubes. Guilty haha.

You are probably right here. But sometimes something is slightly off in either amp, tube(s) used, headphones or something else. A tube that is slightly off in another direction might compensate for that. Rolling tubes can give surprises. Your magic bullet can then be meh for another user.

Since seeing this picture posted with the dual adapter on your amp- how would you weigh the difference of two 6J5’s vs one 6SN7? Are you preferring dual 6J5 tubes in parallel to a single 6SN7 or does it basically come back to the tube being used?
I used a quad 6J5’s in my dac and it was awesome. Shortly afterwards I ordered parallel 6SN7 adapters and Raytheon tubes. Both are similar in my system but I think the old GE 6J5’s may have the upper hand when it comes to overall dynamics. The Raytheon’s have a little more warmth and a slightly different treble response.

All the single triodes I’ve run in tandem with an adapter have bested any of my 6SN7s

The tube itself is going to play a role, but in my experience single triodes perform better in my amp than dual triodes. They have a lower noise floor for starters which is important in a 300B amp
