I'm putting on my grumpy hat now... If you don't have any of these tubes I wouldn't sweat it. If you look across this thread, and this site, you'll see many breathless reviews of *the* tube to have. Some of them are probably by me lol. Usually it is unobtanium and/or super expensive. Or in my case they have weird voltages and bases. There are a ton of them, the Melz, TS BGRP, GEC b65, C3G, etc. etc. etc. Here's the thing, there are many tubes that are capable of giving you great sounds. The kicker is that I bet if you combine any given "grail" input tube with a grail output tube the sound may not impress. It’s certainly unlike any driver I’ve rolled, at least in my Agatha. I would put most drivers on a scale of either dynamic / resolving to warm / musical on the opposite end of the spectrum (with a good deal landing somewhere in the middle)
The 6S5S manages to hit both ends of the continuum simultaneously. It’s one of the most resolving drivers I’ve heard, notes seem to appear out of nowhere and just fade into the distance with perfect decay like no other. There is a weight and grip to the notes other drivers can’t replicate. All while being extremely musical. It’s hauntingly realistic, like the performer is in the room with you. I hear nuances in recordings that come front and center as it brings transients to life. It’s very linear with nice articulated bass but it’s not clinical or dry in any way. Huge three dimensional stage and perfect timbre add to the sense of realism. Mids are nice and lush with sparkling (never fatiguing) highs. I can really crank the volume and never get a sense of fatigue with this driver.
The Russian 6S5S is really in a class of its own
Maybe I'm just a jaded roller... I have gotten amazing sounds out of so many tubes and tube combos. I guess I am just warning folks to avoid getting into the thought pattern of needing a specific tube for great sound or to achieve the "best" sound.
