The Reference 6J5 Thread (L63, 6C5, 12J5, 6P5, etc.)

Good call @mordy. I think these and the Tung-Sol 6J5G/GT are my favorite American tubes. I only have the NU 12V version but they look to have similar construction to the ones you shared. They are sublime. BTW this seller says they have more pairs ($10/pair!) if anyone is looking for these and can run 12V tubes: https://www.ebay.com/itm/266470162970
Another 6J5GT tube I like is the Sylvania tall bottle from 1949-55:

They all have metal base, round plates, getter flash on side of glass and a big clip above the top mica. There are many rebranded ones like FoMoCo, Motorola etc.

I have so many single triodes/triode wired pentodes and they all can give me such good sounds. I remember digging out tons of 12j5gt tubes that I had bought over 10 years ago and shaking my head. What on earth was I going to do with so many Tungsol, NU, and Sylvania 12j5gt? The answer of course was to buy many many more tubes lol. Raytheon 12j5wgt, C3M, 5a/152m, ktz41, Fivre 12j7gt, and on and on. Single triodes really are the best triodes:)

Nowadays it is difficult to obtain "nos tubes".
Therefore, I purchase tubes such as 6SJ7 and 6AU6 (6SH7).
Fortunately, these tubes are cheap because no one pays any attention to them.

The 6AU6 triode connection sounds great.
Another advantage is that there is less noise.

Well, I’m still a long ways away from @Wes S stockpile, but I did just manage to secure a second pair of 6S5S just now 😬

Glad you snagged another pair! I would need a quad and the search is not worth it to me.

Between the G73-R, C3G, many 6SN7 (& 6F8) 6J5, CV6 and tons of top shelf 12A** I have more tubes that I will ever roll in the Envy.
Glad I have this as a 'problem'!:yum:

Anyone bought from this seller in Ukraine?

Yes, I bought a few pairs of 1579’s from him. He’s legit, his prices are right and Vladimir is a genuinely nice guy as well. He’s in Kharkiv so depending on the war that may affect shipping times. You’ll need to provide him a phone number as he uses a freight forwarder. (Otherwise he might use mine again as that happened recently with another sale of his lol)

Excellent, thank you.

Is the Philips 5a /152M a rebranded ITT / STC tube or from a different factory?
I doubt anyone else made that tube other than STC. I don't have any actual info to back that up but it seems like that was too specialized a tube for other companies to make.

Thanks @leftside
So you think ITT and STC each made their own version of the 5A/152M?

I have a matched quad of those ITT / (STC?) coming from dbtubes as well as a quad of the STC D getter version from the UK. Not sure if they will sound different and may all be from the same plant but the D getter version may be earlier production.
