The Reference 6J5 Thread (L63, 6C5, 12J5, 6P5, etc.)

Other than 6C5G... Anyone recognise what manufacturer these are or shed any light on qualities of them...?

Edit: Looking around, seems they might be RCA STs, but can anyone confirm and are they any good!?

I've not been overly enamoured with any of the 2 or 3 RCAs I've heard so far of the 6SN7s. Perhaps it's a different story with 6C5G...

Edit 2: or mullard, perhaps...
Cheers

Ok, not too bothered about previous post - it was just a pretty cheap set of tubes but I'm not that bothered.

Now, this is what I really could do with some help on... Being skint as heck at the mo, I'm putting pennies aside to get a new set of tubes further on down the line - keen to try the 6JC/6C5 family and compare to my wee collection of 6SN7s/6N8S and 12AU7/CV4033 etc...

I can perhaps scrape enough to get a set of either of these below, but not all or more than 1 set for now. Skimming through some of this thread I'm drawn to a few. So...

Can anyone experienced with these tell me which is the most favourable (although I get they may each have their pros and cons) of the list below;
Tungsram 6J5G - CV1932 KB/T
GEC 6J5G black plate, foil getter
Fivre 6C5G mesh anode

If anyone is familiar with 6SN7s, I seem to mostly return to KR 1940's VT-231. So, it doesn't necessarily have to be the most clean and detailed. Warm character (but still with a certain degree of detail) is more important. Not overly rich, gooey warm, though. Not sure if that helps/gives anyone an idea of what I'm looking for.

Open to suggestions, also.

Cheers guys

@reg66

Based on the description of what your priorities are, I think you should be looking at a pair of Brimar 6J5G roundplates. It's in the same lane tonally as a VT-231 Ken-Rad, but with a more polite and linear bass. If the pronounced bass response is what you like about Ken-Rad then that's something to keep in mind. Otherwise the Fivre might be the best bet, the other two are not really very tonally warm or "wet" sounding and lean more toward neutral.

Grand, thanks very much for the prompt response.

@Xcalibur255, sorry, just to confirm... Are these the round plates version you refer to...
Here or
These

Thanks again, reg

EDIT: Actually, I think I might go with the Fivre. Something a bit different and really like the aesthetics, too! Cheers
That first link from Langrex is exactly what I was referring to, yes.

@reg66 I think you will like those Brimars based on your criteria. I lived with them for a couple of days but decided that they're a tad too warm for me.
Living with tubes for a couple of days are too short a time to know how they will perform. Depending on condition they can change considerably. You will usually have to give them playing time in order for them to settle.

I tend to find Brimar on the warmish side as well. Which of course is great with the right circumstances.

Cheers, but as said in the post, I'm looking to buy some 6J5 or 6C5s. Plus I haven't got that sort of cash! For that sort of money I'm assuming they're extremely detailed and clean sounding... But, for that there's a whole plethora of ss amps etc. That's not what I'm looking for with tubes... Cheers tho

Why would you assume that because they are expensive they sound like solid state? Very strange logic.

In the Ultimat3 driving EL39 or EL34 the 6SN7 combination produces a very musical tone. You did ask for suggestions for 6SN7. It’s obviously all about the synergy between the driver and the output tubes, likewise having owned good SS amps I know they sound nothing like them. Good luck with your hunt for 6J’s/6C’s.

I was only assuming they were very clean and detailed. I just meant that if I'm after pristine, clean and detailed music, I would prefer ss for that. But appreciate everyone's taste is different. Plus, there's no way i can afford to obtain such pristine presentation via super pricey tubes and amps such as some of you guys! Maybe one day, but that's far off
