The Post and Math Rock appreciation thread.

Explosions in the sky-Earth is not rock. It is melodic ambient.

Am I confused as to what Post Rock means?

Anyway, I am looking for something that fits these requirements:
Does NOT go for extended period without changing time signature(s).
Does NOT go extended period without vocals.
Does NOT go extended period without polyrythm.
Does NOT go extended period without percussion.

I am not looking for meditation or drug music, I'm looking for ROCK. Examples that I own that are math-ish are Sculptured and Dillinger Escape Plan.

Hit me!

Try out Animals As Leaders, described as instrumental prog metal and featuring the amazing guitar talent of Tosin Abasi.

Also Adebisi Shank and That screwking Tank are heavy math rockers.

Jere is another suggestion, a Polish band called Indukti, described as prog metal, but fits in here as well.

A little on the prog metal side of things, but still great listen.

On the first page I saw Battles

. That makes me smile. I haven't really looked through this entire thread but I'm definitely going to. Has anyone heard and/or liked Gloss Drop?

I don't know if this has been mentioned but Don Caballero is some cool math-rock. American Don is my favorite album. Ian Williams from Battles was in that group. This was his last album with them.

Gloss Drop is a fun album, but I liked Mirrored better.

They're both too different for me to prioritize

They throw down a pretty wicked live set, I must say. Very energetic concert.

Ah here's a good example. When I hear the words "math" and "music" (or) "rock" I think of stuff like this.

What bands do this kind of stuff, without the death metal vocals?  (e.g. either just instrumental, or with vocals but just different type of vocals, either one)

EDIT: What would it be considered then, "speed math metal" I guess?

I think you're looking for death metal or thrash metal.  Math rock is more like Don Caballero (mentioned earlier) or The Dismemberment Plan or Minus the Bear.

EDIT: I don't generally like classifying bands like this, but I think you'd eventually just get really frustrated looking for what you want while calling it math rock.  I think most folks would point to bands like the ones I've mentioned, or others like Slint and Maps & Atlases, and that music seems to be light years away from what you want.

Ehh... Not exactly. I already own a bunch of death metal and thrash metal, hence the "not this kind of vocals" comment

I mean the fact that the instrument work (drums, guitar) is fast, stops and starts frequently, and is generally a "non-standard" format in terms of its structure.

I'm at a loss.  If you have iTunes, try out their Genius feature.  Or try Pandora.  I've had decent success with both in finding new music.
