The MODDED Sennheiser HD 580 appreciation thread.

I also agree with Steve (swt), HD580/600 has won hands down against HD650 every time I have compared the two. The latter cannot match the balance of the former; to me, Sennheiser's house presentation is better represented by the HD580.[/QUOTE]

Ditto - truly Sennheiser at its best - a set of cans that should only appreciate in price and desire over time.

Sorry for reviving a somewhat old thread - but seriously contemplating my own HD 580 mod - and I figure this is the place

Just to confirm - no issues getting the HD 600 grilles off of Sennheiser by phone. Not exactly listed on their website any more. Also - 650 cable definitely makes a difference?

The grills and cable are relatively inexpensive through Sennheiser and for a combined cost of less than $30 for the pseudo-mods, definitely worthwhile.

So to reiterate - sorry guys.

Should be no problem getting the HD600 grilles by phone (at the present moment)? Again, a little concerned as they are not listed on the website.

Would the 650 cable an upgrade? I realize by no means is it a Cardas by any means, but given my limited equipment I doubt cabling it would make as much of a difference. Leaning towards the purchase just as, from what I've heard, it is a nicer cable in terms of sturdiness/build, and costs barely more than shipping.

There should be no problem. I got my grills last week. I don't know if the cable is really an upgrade or not. Most people say yes. Some say there's no real SQ difference, but it's much sturdier. My cable should be coming in soon so I'll let you know what I think.

Definitely let me know what you think doping panda

Looking at the cost of the mod + shipping (by my tally ~$40) -> and it seems the HD 580 gets awfully close to the price of a HD 600 at that point (falling just under that $200 barrier, having seen and had chances at a few HD 600s going at about $210-$220).

Thoughts?

Good point. If it were me I would get the HD 600 if similar price. Plus I think the resale for the 600 would be much better than a modded HD580.

I should say that I have both the HD580 and HD650. I prefer the extra bass of the 650. I may have try this mod for my HD580 though for comparative purposes.

I got the HD650 cable, but not so much as an upgrade but a convenience factor. I was having cable connection problems up at the ear cups. The connector would get jiggled and lose contact. The 650 cable has fatter connectors that don't jiggle as much so they don't lose contact as much.

I never listened to try to hear a sound quality difference in the cable change. I was much more impressed with the effect on the sound when the connectors don't get loose (loose connector means no sound or sound that flakes out).

Thanks Ham_Sandwich - if I do go ahead with the mod/580 purchase will definitely spring for the 650 cable I guess. Pretty much costs the same as shipping.

May I ask, seeing you are the owner of both a 580/600, what your thoughts on the two are?

Simply the best bang-for-your-buck headphone out there.

Here's a picture of mine:

The reason I have both the 580 and 600 is so I can share headphone listening. My amp has two plugs and the only way to make that work properly is to have two of the same headphones plugged in.

The 580 and 600 are so similar to me that I don't care which one I listen to. I have never bothered to try to learn how to listen for and identify the differences between them. I'm just not into that level of critical differentiation. I'm more interested in more obvious differences and none exist as far as I can tell between the 580 and 600. (there goes my audiophile cred)

The main difference between my 580 and my 600 is that the 600 has had far more head time and as such the ear pads are more crushed and form fitting to my head. That affects how far the drivers are from my ears, the angle and the position. I'd suspect that any differences I am hearing between the two now would be more due to the different condition of the ear pads than other factors.

My 580 and 600 are old. I've had them for 10 years? I'm not sure. It's been a long time.
