Will the D3.5 offer the D2.5 modularity?
If D3 is the example: no.

I zapfiltered the Zhaolu so the PSU only needs to power the DAC board, not the analog board.
I would like to place a slightly overdimensioned, but physically smaller PSU in the place of the standard PSU board.

This could give room for the Zapfilter and a dedicated clock to be installed.

Im in the same boat, have mine zapped and using the stock PSU to drive the digital board. There were couple people who replaced the stock PSU board with a simple torroid but not sure how it was wired or which torrid was used. Hopefully, Ill have time to look this up soon. Also if you are still messing with the zap, trying direct wire from the output to the amp without using rca connectors.

I looked at the connection from the PSU board to the DAC board, I see about 6 wires?
If they're all used that could mean 3 different voltage rails? (??)
Did anyone already look into the powering requirements for the DAC board?
Else I might dig into this this weekend.

Hi Gang,
I have two questions:
1) Are the connections to and from the DAC boards the same for both the D2.5C and the D2.5A? In other words, can one simply unplug the D2.5C DAC board and plug in the D2.5A board?
2) Does anyone have a pinout description for each of the boards in the DAC?
Thanks

1) I do think so, since the analog board and power are the same.
2) analog audio on the analog board side; power at the power board side.

Is there anyway I can buy this thing fully modded?

I'm not going to be bothered trying to mod it myself.

Ask a dealer?

but that's the beauty of the zhaolu (and the zero DAC on another thread). you do need to be bothered b/c hen you mod, you void the warranty. when something goes wrong, you need to T/S the issue. if you are no the DIY type, you shld get a name brand that does not need any more tweaking

Well, I tried the Zapfilter, but it doesn't beat the DIY output board that I made for myself. I'll be putting the Zap up for sale on the Trading post, if anyone else want to pick it up to try in their Zhaolu.

@BobMcN: I am interested in the Zapfilter.

Also: I added a D-clock to my NAD C521BEE.
So the chain now is:

NAD C521BEE -> D2.5C -> NAD C320BEE -> Tannoy Fwhatever speakers.

The C521 has the D-clock, the Zhaolu has the Zapfilter and a slightly better crystal.
Although I am quite happy with teh sound, the question always is:
What would be the next tweak?

Hi Gang,
I purchased a couple of Browndog adaptors and some OPA827 op amps to try in my Zhaolu 2.5A DAC. I found that I just do not have the capability to solder these chips to the adaptors properly (can not get solder fine enough for pads). I would like to sell these to someone who has the capability to put these together and give them a try. How do I go about posting a "For Sale"? Sorry for using this thread but am not sure wher eor how to make to posting. Pleaes feel free to contact my directly if desired.

Udo try a Hammond 193L choke on the mains L+N inputs (parallel)
smily_headphones1.gif
Picked this tweak up from the diyaudio forum and cable asylum (for the Zero but it should also work just fine on the Zhaolu).

Cable Asylum: REVIEW: Hammond 139L Filter Choke Power Conditioner/Surge Protector by The Killer Piglet

Follow electrical device precautions of course. The type of choke in the tittle is supposed to be 193L made by the OP. It's a typo.

Thanks for the tip Peete. Would that also work for me in 230V land? (Europe) Or would I need a different part?

Also: Did anyone try any of the Zhaolu's with output transformers instead of opamp or discrete outputs?
Elsewhere people tried them with another DAC board.
I also have two sets of Studers here now, so one could be tried with Zhaolu.

Good question Udo. I don't know for sure.

Got the below info this from here Elysia's DIY Diary :: CS4398 - Unleashing Zhaolu 2.5 DAC

"For digital section only one / two sets of +5V, and for analog section + and - around 15V :
1 & 2 - can be left open
3 & 6 - 5V
4 & 5 - supply grounds"

I havent metered them yet.
What would be the best replacement?
