The Masterpiece Thread - Every time you buy an album that's a masterpiece, post here.

I don't think I can grasp this word "masterpiece", but in my warped and ever changing opinion of things, these stand out......

Goldfrapp - Black Cherry

Yeah Yeah Yeah's - Fever To Tell

That's all I have to say at this point.

Black Cherry? really... maybe I should give it another chance. I found it dissapointing after Felt Mountain.

Anyways, to add one of my own to the list:

DJ Spooky - Dubtometry

Felt Mountain is a good chill out CD, but Goldfrapp's complete metamorphosis with Black Cherry was a shock to me. Once I got over that, I was totally hooked.

To quote Inkblot Magazine's review of The Stone Roses eponymous debut:

"Some records just have it -- a weird kind of life force, a pull-the-stars-from-the-sky magic that says everything at once, without even trying. They capture a moment and never grow old. They turn casual observers into fanatics. Some records are just perfect."

"The Stone Roses' debut LP is a crystallization of everything there is to love about the last 40 years of pop music."

I don't know about perfect, but that first sentence captures it perfectly. I've never had an album take control of my life like this one...the best pop album in the past 15 years, IMO.

Other Masterpieces of the Post-Classical era...

The Beatles - The White Album
The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
Oasis - Definitely Maybe
Pavement - Slanted & Enchanted
Pixies - Debaser
Radiohead - OK Computer
The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead
The Velvet Underground & Nico - The Velvet Underground & Nico

Indy Rock-ish:

Jeff Buckley - 1994 - Grace
Neutral Milk Hotel - 1998 - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea
Pedro The Lion - 1998 - It's Hard To Find A Friend
Death Cab For Cutie - 2003 - Transatlanticism

Indy/Not Indy Rock-Electronic-ish:

Radiohead - 1995 - The Bends
Dirty Three - 1996 - Horse Stories
Radiohead - 1997 - OK Computer
Broken Social Scene - 2002 - You Forgot It In People
The Flaming Lips - 2002 - Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots
The Mars Volta - 2003 - De-Loused In The Comatorium

Rock:

Al Di Meola - 1976 - Land of the Midnight Sun
The Eagles - 1976 - Hotel California
Tom Petty - 1989 - Full Moon Fever
Red Hot Chili Peppers - 1999 - Californication
Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds - 1999 - Live At Luther College
Dave Matthews Band - 2003 - Live In Central Park
Dave Matthews Band - 2004 - Live At The Gorge

Jazz:

Buena Vista Social Club - 1997 - Buena Vista Social Club

Almost everything by Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Dave Brubeck, but particularly:

John Coltrane - 1957 - Blue Train
Dave Brubeck Quartet -1959 - Time Out
Miles Davis - 1959 - Kind of Blue
Miles Davis - 1959 - Sketches of Spain
John Coltrane - 1960 - Giant Steps
John Coltrane - 1964 -A Love Supreme

Celtic:

William Jackson - 1998 - Celtic Experience
William Jackson - 1996 - Inchcolm

Soundtracks:

Yann Tiersen - 2001 - Amélie (OST)

These are all albums which I've had for a while and I feel qualify as masterpieces. I'm relatively new to the Indy genre, and as such have albums which I think are absolutely fantastic but have yet proven the test of time. Some such albums are from artists such as: Muse, The Dears, The Decemberists, The Trews, The Shins, The Walkmen and Hawksley Workman

Sepultura - Chaos A.D.
Without a doubt, a masterpiece in its genre. Great songwriting, with a bit of progressiveness, but it never loses its power. The lyrics are intelligent, which is something you don't see too often in metal. Very good guitar work with equally good drumming... this is what basshead phones were created for. I can't recommend this one enough. If you can, pick up the limited edition copy, which has the very good song Policia and an bizarre yet very funny hidden track at the end.

An older one in my collection that I dug up as inspiration for playing bass, just have to post it here.

Infectious Grooves - The Plague That Makes Your Booty Move...
Like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, except loaded on steroids. A party album through and through, with funny lyrics and great work by Robert Trujilio, probably his finest hour of music (or 45 minutes, to be exact). If you want to know what kind of album it is, just read the song titles: "Punk It Up", "Monster Skank", "Therapy", and the classic "You Lie... And Yo Breath Stank". One of the albums that I will pimp out to anyone and everyone for as long as I live, until they get the appreciation they deserve.
