The JPS Labs: Abyss AB-1266 Impressions Thread

This takes me back...my ongoing search for a lower tier third headphone continues, but for me Sus and 1266 are so far above everything else I've heard and provide such different articulations of music, they're divine as a pairing. Save up and buy a Sus with a powerful tube amp. An opinion you never asked for, I know :)
Understood, but that’s -$10k I’d rather not spend, when I’m currently quite content! Appreciate the perspective, however.

What kind of lower-tier headphone are you looking for?

Finally got a chance to try the Mitch filters today. Impressive technical achievement, but for me they take away a lot of the craziness of the 1266. And I love the 1266 because it's crazy. I don't want something trying to calm it down, which is what it sounds like to me.

It will either be Atrium, Caldera, or LCD-4.

It will either be Atrium, Caldera, or LCD-4.

Atrium is a completely different beast from LCD-4 and Caldera. The latter two have more in common with each other, and it might be worthwhile investigating further.

Exactly my thoughts as well

Is there a way to test drive the filter? I currently use EQ on my RME ADI-2 and the Abyss (I concur with @walterboss) has a crazy brilliance to its presentation. I suppose my EQ-ing increases the craziness!

Have you ever tried the LCD-4 for comfort? If not, you most probably should do so. It's a heavy beast. Sounds nice, though. The ZMFs are very comfy.

You can pad roll with ZMFs. Doing that in LCD-4 is impractical as they are glued onto the chassis.

I doubt that different pads would materially change the LCD4's comfort issues.
It wouldn't - just highlighting that easy pad swapping is an additional feature that ZMFs have

Yeah, got them here. Had LCD 2 and X, never had issues with any of them I love the heft of them. It was the one thing I really disliked about LCD 5: how slender they felt. It's like why people like driving Range Rovers. They feel strong and substantial.

You can download from his website for free trial. Google Mitch filter 1266 should come up.

Thank you! I will read up and try out. From what I understand, you download this as a standalone piece of software and it applies some EQ/filtering at the source (in my case, Macbook)? In other words, I don't need to have some pre-existing software on my computer for this to work?
