Well here is the indie albums with well established bands releasing in 2013.  I am going to go through it and listen to as many bands as possible.  I don't want my list to just being the bands I already know.

Now there's a good list. One of my favorite releases so far this year is Camper Van Beethoven's "La Costa Perdida" which is already out and seems to be missing from that list. That one has been in heavy rotation for me since it came out. I think it's just great. My three favorite releases so far this year are:

Camper Van Beethoven - La Costa Perdida
Foxygen - We Are The 21st Century Ambassadors Of Peace & Magic
Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds - Push The Sky Away

The vinyl movement is an interesting element of indie/hipster culture.  It is objectively and scientifically a lower quality per volume it can reach before sounding god awful.  I understand it is a lot to do with people's interactivity with it.  The care it takes and the added work to play might speak to peoples desire to interact with it. .....

Could the indie scenes growth be due to the reduction in the profitability the major labels?.................

Not sure exactly what you mean in the second setence, but......  While I wouldn't totally discount some of the other factors you mention, I'd say that most people on this Hi Fi related site who listen to vinyl do it because in the end it can sound great.  Well-produced vinyl on a decent setup is fantastic.  Sure, it can be a little more finicky than other formats, but that can also appeal to the gadget/gearhead in us as well.

Later on you said you were getting a lot of surface noise and asked what would be a good setup.  Haven't been personally looking for equipment in a while, but I think entry level stuff from Rega and Project is well-regarded, and I can personally vouch for Music Hall turntables.  But the thing is, if you were finding vinyl really noisy, it could have been just poorly manufactured LP's, and no equipment could fix that.  That's why it's a fun hobby, there's a lot that goes into it, and if you prefer simple plug and play, it's probably not for you.  Lots of HF enthusiasts have tried it and then just gotten out because they just found it a hassle.  But anyway, people who like vinyl aren't necessarily just doing it to try and be cool, ha ha.

On the indie/non-indie topic, it's been done to death.  You're probably overthinking it a bit if you think Doug Martch's massive beard might be a result of some major label's balance sheet.  I'm of the age where much of the rock type music I listen to could be considered 'Indie', and I all can really say is, it's just (some of) the counterculture music of the time.  It really just comes down to the music.  You know it when you hear it/see it.  A few quotes regarding music genres:

'It is becoming increasingly difficult to decide where jazz starts or where it stops, where Tin Pan Alley begins and jazz ends, or even where the borderline lies between between classical music and jazz. I feel there is no boundary line.'  Duke Ellington

'There are two kinds of music. Good music, and the other kind.'  Duke Ellington

That's not to say that genres don't help narrow down and aid discussion, there's nothing wrong with that.  It just doesn't need to be taken too too seriously.  Anyway, I'll be trolling this tread looking for newer bands to check out, since I'm not so up on the current scene.  The good kind of trolling, not the other kind, ha.

I haven't been keeping track of this thread (actually, if I'm completely honest I've just stumbled across it now), but I did a quick thread-search and didn't find anything about Family of the Year as of yet. They still haven't blown up like the similar-sounding Lumineers have, but if you have an independent music station in your town, you may have heard their song Heroes. I won the album Loma Vista in a local radion contest (find a unifying theme between three songs they play in succession; it was Johnny Cash), and I actually enjoy it more than I already thought I would when I bought it. While the first half of the album is similar in vein to Heroes and is rather tried-and-true with the indie-folk sound we all know from the Avett Brothers, etc., the second half uses more electric-guitar instrumentation and isn't afraid to crescendo to an immensely captivating level (I listen to Sigur Ros, and was still impressed by the buildup and climax in some of the latter songs). Some of the lyrics are pretty deep on a Mountain Goats or Dawes level, too (especially Hey Ma and Find It), and it's a really great album all in all. Production value is pretty average (you won't get any of the clarity of a Dave Matthews Band or Patricia Barber album; it doesn't distort like crazy along the lines of The Taxpayers, either), but it's still a thoroughly enjoyable listen.

Listening to the new Johnny Marr album.  I really don't feel like being overly critical with it.  I am sure it will never live up to peoples smith expectation but is it supposed to be.  It is a really cool album.  None of the tracks really stand out.  It is a really enjoyable album.

Thanks for the loma vista suggestion I will check them out.

Well it wouldn't qualify as Indie, but I'm getting more excited for Bowie's new album with each track that I hear...

I must say I'm having the opposite reaction. Nothing measure up to classic tracks like Heroes, at least not yet.

I did not even know he was coming out with a new album. Has it been leaked or is it already out?

Thanks, I had a sick day today.  So, I was listening to music like crazy.  I love seeing the talent of the past still releasing.  I just got my Fleetwood Mac Rumours re-release.  What a gorgeous album it is.  Plus I got a punk album called fidlar which I have no clue what it will sound like.  The record store suggested it and they always tell me about some interesting albums.  If you are ever in cincinnati I would stop by shake it records.  We have two great record stores and that is my favorite one.

Edit:
Am I the only one when I think about David Bowie I think of the venture brothers?

Edit:
The link to the video was sadly blocked in the United States at least.
