I'm going to purchase both this and the Fiio X3 through Amazon and send the loser back. Also getting the ZERO AUDIO-ear stereo headphone carbo Tenore earpods. Something tells me the DX50 will be a keeper, though.

Curious to hear what you find out, but I'm loving my dx50. The silicone case kind of sucks but I'm too cheap to pay $40 for a case (why buy a case when you can buy new earphones)

Scratch the Fiio X3. Just went with my gut instinct (and reviews on here) and got the DX50, Zero Audio Carbo Tenore phones, and 32gb card.

I'll keep you all posted.

Thanks.

Looking at attaining a DX50 and was wondering how much the software has improved since it first came out. Also, how is FLAC playback? I understand that it is not smooth and very slow on the Fiio X3, how about the DX50?

Thanks.

FLAC playback works fine on my DX50, its not as smooth or quick as on my smartphone but then my smartphone doesn't sound as good as the DX50. Its good enough to get the job done and you get some good sound quality and features for the price. The only time the X3 is better is when its used as a usb DAC, although the DX50 can function as a usb dac its given me quite a few issues in this area.

FLAC works perfectly well on the DX50.  Even at hi-res (I have some 24/176 that work just as well as the 16/44 files).  I have no idea how lower quality formats like MP3 work, as I only use FLAC.

I was going to keep my DX50 pure FLAC and did for some time. Unfortunately a lot of my library is in other formats so I gave in. That takes out some of the SU builds that you guys are loving. Do enjoy it on stock 1.50 anyway so there.

Since CD's are recorded at 16bit, is there a huge loss of 16 vs 24bit?

Where can I attain 24 bit rock songs (currently own Pink Floyd and Daft Punk at 24bit, 92kHz)?

Is there a lossless codec that works better than FLAC on the the DX50?

You can buy or "find" hi-res all over the place.  Google is your friend.

Is FLAC 24 bit better?  That could flame out this thread, so I won't say yes.  Or no.  While I do I enjoy my "normal" 24 bit hi-res files, I also enjoy my 16/44.

However, there are a bunch of SACD rips in DSD/DSF/DFF 1 bit 2.8 Mhz floating around and I can state that they sound very good indeed, even though I have to down-sample them to FLAC 24/176 to get them to play on the iBasso.  They sound better than lower hi-res releases of the same material, and than 16/44  Is it the mix or the quality or...?  Can't/won't say.  But I compare a "regular" hi-res copy of, say, Miles Davis' Sketches of Spain 24/88.2, with an SACD ISO 1 bit copy that is brought down to 24/176 and boy, can you tell the difference. Big time. Let alone my 16/44 CD rip.

I can also say that I have had some hi-res 24 bit David Bowie and it sounded like crap when compared to a regular 16/44 rip.   I guess it depends on source, and method, and your player and your listening device.  At least one place selling hi-res material has a reputation of putting out "hi-res" that is sourced from low-res material.  Buyer beware.

The majority of my files are 16 bit, but I do "upgrade" to 24 when I can find it.  And I have 10 or more albums taken from 1 bit that I am in love with.  An incredible sound, strong and delicate and powerful all at the same time.   Although the higher the res, the bigger the file.  A 16 bit FLAC is about 30mb, a 24 bit can be almost double (or more than) that, and the down samples I am making are in the 250-350mb range.  Fills up a 64gb card really quickly.

If you like Dave Matthews Band, they released one of their Live Trax albums (#28 or 29; can`t remember) in 24bit digital download and I can tell you, it is awesome.  There are a lot of instruments, a lot of different timbres, a lot of complex music and it all sounds fantastic, detailed, powerful.  You can get it from their website.
Also, everyone should check out the German website HifiStatement. They have a pretty huge free downloads area, including a lot of DSD-recorded live sessions.  Pretty awesome. . .

I don`t know if there`s any codec that `works` better than FLAC.  It`s just a compression/storage system; what goes in it is what matters.  What do you want to improve?

"Newbie Alert" I have the DX-50 for 2 weeks or so now & would like to try this SU software. Audiophile for 40+yrs but not so tech savvy with computer & files & such.
I've read the thread for 7 pages or so to see all the comments about adjustments.
Is it possible for me to do this or must I just use it as I got it? I have 3 sansa clips ripped my cd's to 1411 kbs wav files.
I've downloaded the 24/96 hi-res files. Wondering?

You can adjust the settings as you like. Just push the hold button up and turn the DX50 on and you will be shown the options menu

Just got the dx50. Is it just me or every time i turn on the player, it will take my to scan the sd card or browse files? And the scan time was painfully long. I've auditioned a dx50 before and i don't think that on that dx50 the scan time was as long using the same exact card.

Also held the volume up switch down & it started with a blue screen for boot/ update reset items?
as far a adjustments or settings , I have not seen that Yet? Thanks for trying.

Sorry, I assumed that you already had Sound Unlocked installed. In this case:

1. Download dm1try's Sound Unlocked firmware from here: https://github.com/dm1try/dx50_sound_unlocked

2. Install it as you would install any stock firmware.

3. Enjoy :)
