The iBasso DX50 Thread - Latest firmware: 1.9.5 - June 30, 2016

Just got a chance to try the AK100II. I have to say it is better than my current DX50 rockbox with E12A. Only test it with 1 song though so I can't give detailed comparison, but I find the AK100II have more detailed mid, better soundstage and instrument separation. Still given the price difference I think the DX50 performs remarkably well (350$ for my combo and the AK100II is about 930$ here)

Again, try also SU 1.3.3 with settings I mentioned before ;) Use more different tracks(genres) and do A/B blind test.

Some have more detail or can sound more spacious...

Have You tried DX50 with sound unlocked 1.3.3 @ flac/iir off/cpu default? Imho it`s one of the best FW`s for DX50 regarding spacious and detailed sound at same time ;)
User Koolpep compared DX50 with SU against AK100mk2 and X5: http://www.head-fi.org/t/679473/the-ibasso-dx50-thread-latest-firmware-1-6-0/16140#post_11235862

And if one dares to open up DX50 and change HO/LO caps then it makes things noticeably better! ;)

I just switched back to SU 1.3.3. I had completely forgotten how good this firmware sounds. It just makes me realize how much I can't stand the Rockbox sound signature. Farewell, replaygain. You will be dearly missed.

I went back to SU because it really does sound much better. I found that if I make sure gapless is turned "on" (I forgot to do this last time) the gapless hiccups are much more manageable and make the improved sound quality worthwhile.

I'm using FLAC/irr off/315 at the moment and it's very nice.

But I have a lot of ALAC files, too. If I go to lossless/irr off/cpu 315 (or cpu default), will that have a noticeable impact on the sound?

I'm sure it will sound better than all, but all of my lossless files are FLAC so I don't have any experience with it. I could give it a listen later when I get home from work.

Testing with so many FW kinda hurt my ear (and brain). I do remember the really nice vocal of 1.3.3, but the soundstage presentation wasn't to my liking. 1.4 was fine, but it seems that the stock FW doesn't play .wv file for some reason, rockbox play them flawlessly. Rockbox is better than stock 1.6 (easy to compare thnks to dualboot), but I hadn't try comparing it with SU (heck comparing 2 SU make me switching back and forth a lot before settling on one). I will try it out tmr.

Great, now I have round 2 of maybe sending this dang thing in to get fixed. Every now and then, mostly today I get a bz bzzzzzz bz bz bz while listening to music. I had to turn the thing off/on/off/on and finally went away, until it comes back again, had it doing it to me last time I used it. >:(

Any idea what it could be if it'd be an easy fix on my own? I'm not paying 15 bucks to ship this thing back to China again and be without it for another month and a half.

Hi

I have a similar problem. Some bzzzz that starts when the DX50 is on (not during startup, only start at one stage). Did try to switch to latest firmware from ibasso with no success (still the same annoying noise).

I don't understand why it does that, it used to work very fine and nothing special did happen in the meantime...

Any things I could try?

Regarding SQ, I had the opportunity to compare it to my X5 and the DX50 is pretty good - with SU 1.3.3. At first I did compare DX50 with an old firmware to X5 of course X5 was way better. But once I did set up SU 1.3.3 on the DX50 I have to say that both players were pretty damn close. On most albums I couldn't say that the X5 sounded better.

On some albums there might be slightly more detail on the X5 in the high (or did it bring more fatigue?). Instrument separation might be a little better on the X5 too but I can't do any blind test so my mind might play tricks with me... Sound signature is a bit different, but in the end I decided to keep the DX50. (But if there is no way to remove this annoying noise I might come back using only the X5 - would it be better built?)

Anyway if one might ear a little difference it's impressive how small it is. But I was surprised too how firmware sensitive is the DX50!

Cheers

Strange, experimenting with the player it appears that the noise reacts with the activity: if I write a file on the internal memory it makes more noise and a different noise, if I interact with the touch screen the noise is different too and reflects what I'm doing.

Any idea where this can come from? Which component could cause that?

Thanks!

edit: tried all different firmwares, even the first ones.. they all have this noice coming, either when the player finishes booting and shows "browse card" or when I start playing something on it (on older firmwares)...

I`m not getting tired of saying this - now go and change HO / LO capacitors!

Did send you a PM. Thanks

That sounds interesting (and that might even fix that noise problem if the problem is with the capacitor - but as the unit is almost new I'd better get it fixed by the Ibasso team if it's possible (and the problem might come from elsewhere than the capacitors)) - but I did read the topic about the mod and it seems quite doable and a pretty interesting change, making the DX50 an even better player than what it already is...

The noise can't come from the capacitors. It is always the sensitive amp area that gets desturbed by the digital/processor part. i don't think that the amps in your player are more sensitive, i think that the processor or its surroundings are disturbing more or a metal shielding inside the player is missing.
I'd recommend to let iBasso do the repair under guarantee.

Thanks for your input. It makes sense that the disturbance comes from the processor or a surrounding component as the noise change depending on the activity on the player.

I just don't understand how come this disturbance came to happen in the first place.

I'll probably send the player directly to iBasso so that they can take care of the repair.

Hello guys,

I'm quite new to this thread, so pardon me if that's already been answered before. I also hope this is the correct thread.

I have my iBasso since roughly a month.
This morning, I had quite some hard time to eject the microSD but it eventually eject it after 4-5 times.
Now, I won't stay inside. When I push it inside, it won't lock. I can feel the spring pushing it back, but nothing is happening.

Have you ever had this before? What can I do?

TIA for your help!
