I received the GS-1 today.
I have had it running in for an hour or so. I took a quick listen and the sound is not what I expected so far. My gilmore v1, V2 and past v2-SE's were fast, dynamic and very neutral sounding. This amp hooked up to a warm source (SO Music Hall cd-25 with level 3 mods) is very refined sounding with lots of warmth. You could mistake the sound SO FAR for that coming from a good tube amp. The treble in particular is silky smooth. On this source I dont hear any treble anomolies period. I am using senn 650's with an oehlbach upgrade cable. The soundstage is not quite as big as my singlepower mpx3's but its more expansive than my past gilmores. The gilmore sounds darker than my mpx3-6/12sn7's, and especially my old chassis mpx3. There is more depth and a more laid back midrange with the GS-1. Unless the cd-25 is rounding things off, this amps sound is much different than the usual gilmore house sound. I will put it on my sacdmods 555es tomorrow and see if that speeds and brightens the GS-1 up.
The amps appearance is just beautiful. This one is silver and noticeably larger than the past v2. I thought the amp looked a goldish color on the website
but maybe it was the lighting. The detented volume knob is a nice touch with a nice smooth action. The gain switch is very effective and works without pops or clicks even if you change the gain midstream. The back rca inputs are a little close together for my interconnects locking rca's... but I got them on with little effort. The only ergonomic flaw I see is the power switch. Its close to the power inlet and where my power cord flares out almost blocks the switch. The switch is also recessed some and this adds to the difficulty of trying to engage the switch. I used the eraser end of a pencil to click it on. Overall though, the apprearance and lay out are well done.
More listening while typing reveals a little bass bloat. Given the warm source and the senn 650's I wouldnt lay this on the amp, but on the other components in the chain. Unfortunately, I dont have any grados right now so my impressions are only with the 650's. The brighter grados would definitely mate well with this source>amp combo. I have noticed how much slower and warmer this source sounds so keep that in mind. I dont want to unhook everything and drag it all down to the basement right now... but I suspect the sound will be more like what I am used to on my sacdmods 555es, while adding more dimensionality and refinement beyond my past gilmore amps. Back to listening guys.
