Hi

I have the X3 II and use ATH-M50X Headphones.

I listen to a lot of heavy metal and also find I have it set to high gain and at high volumes a lot of the time.

Would I get any benefit of using an E12 or E12A amp for sound improvements or notice anything worth paying for ?

I have read multiple threads and some say yes, some say wasted with those Headphones etc, so just seeing what everyone's thoughts are.

Thanks for any feedback.

Fiio has a new Amplifier called Fiio A5 coming up. You could look up that. Alternatively you could also see Fiio E17K Alpen 2 DAC/Amp. It gives you tonal controls for Bass and Treble and is very easy to adjust. The sound is also responsive to the tonal controls. I'd suggest you read Brooko's review of Fiio E17k as he's described in detail the functionality of Fiio E17k and would be a good option in the same budget, or less. Hope that helps!

Hi

Thanks for the reply.

Price wise the E12 is £109 and the E17A is £99. I would add the Fiio L16 cable to this as well.

So are you saying the E17A based on the adjustment of treble and Base options to adjust ?

Yes, the E17k has great tonal controls which are really helpful. They also help if you do not use too much of EQ and want to do away with that hassle. Your headphones are 32ohms so they should be fairly easy to be driven by Fiio E17k. Do read Brooko's review. That should give you an insight into its functions.
Hope this helps.

I might get one soon. A few questions to other users.

  • Does the DAC mode works on Linux? Specifically with kernel 4.7
  • Does it have any issue handling large playlists? About 2000 - 2500 to be more precise. Can I use relative paths in playlists?
  • How's the UI? Is it quick to navigate? Any lags, bugs, crashes?
  • Is there unicode support? For cjk characters at least.
  • How's OGG support? I use MP3s and OGGs, and don't want one format to be buggy or a battery hog.

hi, duo8
Thank you for your support to our product.

1. The DAC mode can work well in most Linux system.
2. You can set external playlists by yourself. You can follow the instruction in this post: http://fiio.me/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=40017&page=1&extra=#pid105482
It is not suggested to put too many music in one playlist or it may slow down the operation.
3. The UI may need to be experienced by youself .
4. The X3II support unicode of the language it supported including cjk characters.
5. The X3II can support the MP3 and OGG formats.
You can get more information of the X3II from: http://www.fiio.net/en/products/39 & http://www.fiio.net/en/supports/33

I have a new phone with USB-C rather than micro USB. Is there a way to get the Fiio working as DAC with USB-C? Tried it with a regular adapter like this but it didn't work (worked fine with my old phone though).

So I tried this with a new cable and tried with Beta FW 1.3 and 1.44, in each case the Fiio LED just flashes blue and green, but it doesn't change into DAC or USB storage mode...has anybody experienced this before?

lol Wait, X3ii has just being freshly realeasing ... it is still young!

Well, since they have frozen the firmware on the X3 II  I think it is a good bet that a X3 III is under development.

Best guess on my part is that the biggest new feature will be Bluetooth.

Now if I could dream FIIO could throw in two regular SD card slots instead of MicroSDXC.   Then I would not even care about the loss of OTG.

The biggest wish list on my part is that FIIO could purchase a Shanling M2 and study its music signature.  Somehow Shanling added an open sound quality to their X3 competitor that is worth trying to match or beat.  Don't get me wrong.  I really like FIIO.  I just like it when vendors try to up their game when they can.

So was the X1 ! Can't complain though, it's like computers. If they weren't evolving so quickly and we had to accept the depreciation, we would still be using Intel 486's.

486?  maybe a Core 2 Duo or equivalent due to the changes in the bus and memory architecture, for most a A6-6400K or Core i3 is more than enough.
