That's just stupid money.
You pay for what you get. High Fidelity has a price to pay for. I think they are people who are more sensitive to subtleties of musical tonalities/SS than others. There are actually electronic parts that cost more because of their quality.
SQ evolution never end! There will always be better to make us spend more. Sometimes there is no need to pay more if you can not even appreciate, enjoy. You pay more... you get more, but, you have to see (hear) what you realy got.

;)

You can most likely get something you won't notice much if any difference and a really nice set of cans for that money.

I've made my own high contrast, larger font theme, as theme 1 on the stock 1.4 stable firmware. Rather than increasing the font size, I've replaced the font file with the bold version, making text a bit wider but not higher and far more legible. After going completely white on black, I discovered how good the X3ii's screen in fact is, and how the poor contrast and thin lines of the original graphics undermine legibility, so I started adding color again, probably more than I should have.

Beware that the "font" for the numbers showing the time remaining and total below the progress bar (they are individual graphics in the litegui\theme1\number folder) are loaded when you "boot" the machine, and not when you switch themes; so if you switch themes, you have to power off and on to see the intended graphics. Each of the original themes has the same number images, so you don't normally notice this.

The actual firmware file is of course X3II.fw (which you copy to root of the SD-card, and install by powering on while holding down the upper left button). Directory "changes" in my dropbox share are the files I changed in the original unpacked firmware. There's one additional file that's not in this X3II.fw: "changes\str\english\eq.ini" lists the names of the headphones I use as titles of equaliser profiles rather than genres (does anyone really change the equalizer profile along the type of music playing??). To change the equaliser items to your liking, you need to build your own firmware: unpack any X3II.fw file, edit "changes\str\english\eq.ini" in the directory created folder, and pack it again.

I love fiio. But I am starting to flirt with the Shanling m2. Just about all the goodness of the chord mojo but in a small compact player that also acts as a dac. My x3 thinks I am going to have an audio affair

I've had a look at that DAP...only online of course but it looks very interesting and all the reviews I've read are positive. Looks like a great little player.

And so did I. I would go as far as saying I preferred the sound of the X3ii on every level, and the firmware responsiveness was far more superior too.

Yes the firmware seems to be much more responsive on the X3ii also. It's a great little player...Fiio just needs to bring back the silicone case and dump the cheap plastic ones

No silicone nor plastic case for me as well... FiiO just need to pack in new case, similar to the Dignis leather case.
What would be an advantage in the eyes of the competition.

Does anyone know any mid-tier DAP that has good performance as an external DAC? I am seriously considering to purchase Fiio X3 2nd gen since it has external dac function and not sure if there is anything else that may excel as external Dac performance. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. :)

Yes that would be nice. Do you have a Dignis case? I've got one...very nice quality.
That will be nice to get one as well. Where did you get yours from ? What flavor have you choice ? I'm from Canada, I will see if Amazon.ca have it at a fair price.

I have a black one and I got it from eBay. It was pretty expensive though $55 or $56 CDN. I don't think they offer them on Amazon.ca at least not the last time I looked.

Oddball question , have any of you used the X3II as a DAC for the PlayStation 4? I was rather miffed my Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 doesn't work with it. It would be nice if the X3II works with PS4. I'll know soon as ones on the way.
The more it will do the better value to me :) I currently use Sony dongle from the Silver headset, Turtle Beach Earforce DSS or Astro MixAmp
Thanks
