I know, I know, it's a portable player.  But she wanted a little tube love.  Sounds delicious!!  If the outputs are there might as well use them.

Cheers!!!

+1, the X1 is a great source, I hook it up everywhere...
  1. to Vali + HD600 (bedside rig)
  2. to PA2V2 + HD600 (my ironing gear - portable enough to walk between the ironing board and the closet)
  3. to E07K + iems (portable rig)
  4. to the living-room stereo
etc...

Hi, I use the X1 alone, or with my Mont Blanc but what is the advantage to used the X1 with the E07K (that I also have) ?
Thanks

Sonically, none that I can hear (with IEMs).  It just avoids me the hassle of switching between HO and LO modes.  My typical commute routine:
1) X1 → car stereo
2) X1 → E07K → IEM as I walk between the parking lot and the office
3) X1 → desktop amp → full-size headphones as my office gear

So the portable amp saves me the step of messing with the X1 as I switch gear...

Thanks, Well almost same reason as me... My E07K is used as my Computer sound card with Active speakers then X1 + Mont Blanc as my portable rig. I'm just looking for a good set of IEM when going outside as inside home it's my portable rig and Grado SR225

to use with what gears? I feel like a ranting old man, but the load matters.

and maybe you need to reassess the meaning of upgrade, because smoother will not come from better fidelity, in fact it's probably the opposite.
no shame in having a preference for relaxed sound(I do), but it would be sad to waste money seeking the ultimate fidelity if it's not actually the sound you're looking for. nobody ever said that great fidelity protected us from crap mastering and recording. but some massive distortions can do that very well (like very colored tube amps can do).

also changing headphone/IEM will most certainly do more to change smoothness, refinement ... than changing DAPs.

I would look into an amp.  You have good headphones, but an amp will really bring out the sound you are looking for without needing  new DAP.  I would recommend a Topping NX1 amp.  I used that amp with my X1 and HD 558 and it paired extremely well together.  I only bought an X3II because I wanted OTG storage for my growing library.  I did back and forth testing and really couldn't tell a difference in sound between the amped X1 and the non-amped X3II with the same headphones.  Unless you need the added features of the X5II and if you have the money, then I say go for that, but most folks will tell you to invest in headphones first.  You'll be surprised at how an amp can boost the soundstage and add color (or bass) depending on the amp.  You could also look into a FiiO E11k for a little more and get a bass boost (although passive) and keep your existing set up and save a lot of money.  Just my thoughts.
