The Entry Level Stax Thread

Never heard the 202s, but I have a pair of Lambda Nova Signatures. The LNS is head over heels better in terms of imaging, clarity and ease of presentation compared to the L300s, my only other reference point. I still haven't been able to figure out soundstaging on headphones compared to speakers, whether it's in the rear or front of my head.

Hi, i got STAX lambda pro classics (with pad mod) and T1 amp with new tubes. What do you thing would be best option for upgrading from it to: L-300, L-500 or L-700?

will SRM 252 drive the 007 MKI???

Yes, but not anywhere near it’s potential. The 007 is very hard to drive, you’re better off with a Kevin Gilmore amp if the expense is viable.

Hello all, I am awaiting my first pair of stax electrostatics. I rolled the dice and bought a used SR-X MK3 and an SRd-7. The headphones look to be in good shape and owner reports they work just fine. I figured with the srd 7 if there is a channel imbalance I can fix it on my AVA/Amp. Currently I do have a pair of drop Koss ESP/95x. and like them a lot. SHould I expect similar performance or better from the Sr-X mk3? At only $200 delivered I felt it was worth taking a chance on them - good decision?

It depends on that particular copy, there are a handful of them which don't sound like they used to when they came out of the factory, either the coating has deteriorated or there are holes in the diaphragm causing a loss in efficiency and bass response. But the good ones are very good for the money, much more linear compared to the ESP/95x.

Thanks for $200 I figured I'd gamble and if those cans aren't great I still have the srd-7 and can look for a different headphone while enjoying my ESP/95x.

I have two copies now and I was quite surprised when I compared the two. I've sent the bad one for repair, it will cost more than what I paid for in the first place, but I am curious about how it will turn out. When they describe the SR-X Mk3 as 'exceedingly bright' they might just be listening to a pair that is in need of a refurbishment.

The Pro bias headphones seems to be much more resilient to aging (also more of them were used with a dedicated amp instead of an adapter when damage is more likely to occur). At least I tested three copies of the Lambda Pro and they were much more consistent.

Hey guys, I'm ready to step into electrostats and want to spent 2kish or less. I've decided to try the 700s over the 300s because why not. Do you guys have a better recommendation over the 700's to start with? Do you recommend any DACs that are nicely paired which whatever energizer I get? Thanks for your help!

Stax are worthy of very resolving dacs. Yggy, Holo, Denafrips, Chord, whatever you want to spend.
