Oddly enough, it kind of reminds me of a less forward Koss ESP 950. Lean but very punchy bass, fully present mids with plenty of detail and a touch of warmth, bright but somewhat relaxed top end. Both are analytic but not fatiguing to me. I dunno, it's a bit of a strained comparison, but I was reminded of it.
 
I think the SRH1840 is definitely flagship material.

Does anyone know anything about Sennheiser HD555s (or their upgrade 558s)?

I own them. I foam modded them on the day I bought them so I don't know what actually changed -- I just did it because everyone was saying it was a great idea.

Now people are telling me that it is actually not a good idea to have taken the foam out. I was wondering if anyone knew anything about that stuff.

I remember reading that they shared drivers, making the foam the only actual difference between the two.  I was tempted to try the mod back when I owned the 555's, but ended up selling them when I got my 650's. 

So, I have no idea, tbh, but I doubt you ruined them if I could defoam my 650's without doing such.
