I once made homemade ginger ale. The recipe called for a lot of sugar, some shredded up ginger, and bread yeast. You put all this in a two liter bottle filled with water, made sure it was good and shaken up, then set it somewhere warm and dark to ferment for a few days. It was only supposed to have a trace amount of alcohol, but something must have gone wrong because this stuff ended up being quite strong. I actually didn't care for the flavor (if you like very sharp ginger beer it tasted a lot like that), and I'm not really a big drinker to begin with, so it mainly had curiosity value.

Sitting here at my kitchen table enjoying a little free time from work, drinking coffee, using a snus and having bensodiazepines in my blood. Not that I would want to promote drugs (Hunter...) but it does take care of the anxiety an some of the paranoia as well. Speaking of which, I've been on disability for a few weeks now and getting used to my new medications, and they seem to be starting to work. I went a few days without cymbalta and lithium, and my world turned literally upside down, and I barely managed to get out of my couch, let alone function brain wise. I did manage to spend some more money, and bough a Seiko Chronograph watch and an Invicta Force watch because of it's look. Anyway, I'm slowly but steadily getting back to life and back to being able to enjoy things again - such as snus, coffee and this frigging iPad. I can't believe I waited so long before getting one, as it's awesome, even with IOS 7.

iOS 7 is a bit different than 6.3, yet similar enough to make me understand everything from the get go, and even the extra added functions. Now, here's the deal what I don't like about it: it's a resource hog. From my understanding, the iPad 4 is a lot faster than the previous model, the third gen IPad, and even then it gets a bit stuttery and laggy at times. Other than that, it's just improvements, and I thoroughly enjoy it more than the previous OS. First off, the overall design speaks to me more than the previous skeumorphism look, as it looks fresher and more modern. I have nothing against the icons, and I usually use third party apps anyway, which blend in beautifully. Second, the parallax effect is just so frigging cool, that I sometimes just look at my wallpaper just to see the effect in action. It's so ... Futuristic (not in the art ism kind of way, but in a "we are living in the 21st century" kind of way). Also, the parallax effect works with popups as well, which I discovered a few days ago when I wanted to change an option and suddenly the background started to shift. I wonder if a subtle shading would further improve the effect? Last but not least, it just seems more functional and better as a whole than IOS 6 did, though you should note that I didn't have too much time time with the previous OS to learn its ins and outs. If you wonder, I bought the Mini this spring and upgraded to the big brother in the summer - and yes, I know they'll release a new one soon (supposedly) but I'll stick with this and skip next gen, and upgrade to the one after that. Oh and if you wonder, I got myself the 128 GB version as it was only $50 more than the 64 GB version.

As for the snus, having been a heavy snuser and smoker for the better part of two decades, I have slowly but surely been switching to snus entirely. I know it's not 100% healthy, but it's tastier, cheaper, lasts longer and last but not least, it's still healthier than smoking cigarettes. I just ordered more snus for about $250, and wjile I still jat left from my last batch, I just couldn't prevent myself from ordering more and new tastes. Predominantly Oden's snus, and Thunder snus, along with some Jakobssons. Those three brands are my favorites snus brands by far. The tastes are perfect, the strength is just marvellous and thefpouches are soft, filled to the brim and lasts for at least an hour. This time I oredered some more tobacco flavored which go well with coffee, and some subtly flavored (cinnamon, lime, some fruit) which go well with tea and are just perfect for the times you want a break from the tobacco flavour, but still want the nicotine. These snuses are quite strong though, and not recommended for "snewbies".

Nothing new onfthe audio front though, except that I think I want to sell my Pro 900 and the D2000. I just prefer cheaper headphones over them, such as the HD25 and the M50. Don't know why, but music feels more engaging with headphones with smaller soundstages imo. Perhaps buy the new iPhone 5s for the money, since I currently don't have a phone except for my work phone, which I feel less and less inclined to use for personal matters, even though they've literally said it's okay to do as much as I want to. For the sake of my sanity, I understand that I need to separate my work from personal life, and a good start is to get a personal phone.

GTA V vs Saints Row IV: I haven't made up my mind yet. I love the silliness factor of SRIV, but I also love everything in GTAV. GTA feels bigger, more serious, and as if Rockstar put a lot more effort into making it a real life gangster simulation than the SRIV team did, however, SRIV is clever, bordering to genius, in it's own ways. The idea of making SRIV a simulation within a game, opens up for so many creative things, and so many outrageous stunts, yet it all makes sense - it's a simulation, it's not meant to be realistic and make sense. GTAV on the other hand is meant to make sense, which it does for the most part. They're both masterpieces in their own ways, and I think this generation it really doesn't even make much sense to compare them since they're so different despite being so alike. I love both games, and I play both of them frequently.

Edit: Also, I finished reading Y - The Last Man. Such a good comic book story. It's about this young man who, together with his monkey, is the last man alive since something wiped out all the other men in the world. Now, this would seem like a paradise for most men (or a nightmare), but he has a girlfriend/fiancée in Australia, which makes things a bit more complicated. The president of USA wants him to get to a scientist who should help save the world by figuring out why he survived and not the other men, and sends one of her bodyguards/agents to escort him. Things don't always go as planned obviously, and it becomes more of an post-apocalyptic adventure with a lot of twists and such. Really recommendable imo, and if you like comic books and haven't read it, you owe it to yourself to read it.

IOS7 here also, I like the Windows 8 like vector graphic style of the UI, but it is at times less responsive, and I'm really not a fan of the transparency thing with the browser.  Mostly I just notice it when the titlebar looks like the colour is off - just sort of looks like the screen is broken or something, I really don't see what it adds to the experience - it's just distracting.  I'm also kind of disappointed that the had to go with the vector graphic, flat colour thing, it just seems sort of unoriginal.  Don't get me wrong overall I like the graphic design, and how the keys sort of disappear on the keyboard when depressed.  I guess that's the thing with post Steve Jobs Apple, it just seems like the really visionary creations are behind them.  It's like with the iPhone 5s, it's nice ot have the extra speed and functionality but it's the same basic form factor as the previous 3 models - a sort of small-medium sized smartphone with a slick UI, nice camera, and some nice cloud sync features.  Smartphone wise the only technology I'm really looking forward to is Google Glass.

Also surprised nobody discussing it yet but Steam OS seems to be cropping up in all the usual places.  I like the idea, and I hope the game developers jump onboard to take advantage of the platform, and that Open GL is revived.  I was actually talking to my brother in law the other day about Steam building an OS, and wondered whether it would work with all the drivers thew would need etc - I guess basing the OS off Linux takes away a lot of the work.  On my own computer I actually already have a dedicated gaming OS installation, and a dedicated music OS installation - it's not really necessary it just frees me up to change settings without compromising either gaming or music playback.  Steam OS would be welcome, and I will definitely use it when it comes out.

Also the 1Plus2 is now with me as part of the Australian listening tour!

I posted some impressions here: http://www.head-fi.org/t/623514/tralucent-audio-1plus2-iem-appreciation-impressions-thread/4245#post_9832789

Honestly though I feel like I am lost, because at a certain price for audio gear my mind just goes blank.

Speaking of iOS, I'm disappointed that Apple hasn't added additional steps to the volume control for the stock Music player. Twice as many steps would be perfect. I can't tell you how many times I've been annoyed by the fact that when I go up one notch in volume, it's too loud, but when I go down a notch, it's too quiet. Sure, it's theoretically possible to fine tune by moving the volume slider manually with my finger, but it's very difficult to do, at least for me. As soon as I let go, another part of my finger touches somewhere else and it jumps to the wrong position.

You lose out on remote and mic functionality. Although I just realized... I no longer own a single pair of headphones with smartphone controls, unfortunately. But they can be recabled.

ikr, I only use my headphones with a DAP... I dont use em with a phone and in addition

OMG the w1000x from the hm801 and Pb1 SANG like magic... had to keep the w10000x after all! But need to BLITZKREIG sale on my Dt 990 and Shure 840, to afford a balanced cable for my HE 400 :O

As a rule of thumb are there any tubes the R10 is known to sound great with and vice versa?

I think it would depend more on the amp in question rather than specific tubes, how they're implemented and whatnot. The DNA Stratus is supposed to be a really good match. I also know someone who likes them with the ECP L-2. Those would be the options I'd be most interested in, personally.

Speaking of ECP Audio, I really hope Doug decides to release a commercial version of his transformer based amp, the Black Diamond. I need to send my prototype in for some minor repairs, as the volume pot is causing some electrical noise due to the way it was installed. I just never got around to doing it, but I should because it's really a fantastic little amp. I'm also curious as to how the Electro Magnetic Amp Company's transformer amp is coming along. I posted some photos of it earlier in the year; its visual design is largely based on vintage radio equipment from the first half of the 20th century. Unfortunately it's supposed to be around four times the price of what the Black Diamond would be. Still would like to hear one at some point.

In the next few months there are several sub-$1k amps that have the potential to be game changers in my estimation. The Black Diamond would be one of those assuming Doug is able to get the price to where he wants it. Oh, and if he decides to even put it into production of course. Then there's the upcoming portable from Cavalli Audio, the pre-production version of which I should be hearing sooner rather than later. There's also a new amp from a very popular company that shall go unnamed for now, something of a surprise since it hasn't been mentioned on head-fi before. A friend of mine has been able to listen to it, and he's really enthusiastic about what he's heard. Maybe one of the best "cheap tube amps" he's ever heard. Or put another way, a cheap tube amp that doesn't sound like a cheap tube amp.

Oh, and there's a new Apex amp from Pete Millet called the Teton:

http://www.head-fi.org/t/683115/the-apex-high-fi-audio-teton

...which is apparently going to be priced at $5k. Sigh.

Really, to be perfectly honest, the majority of this stuff---while super neat-o keen---doesn't really interest me. I'll be picking up the Cavalli portable if it plays nicely with IEMs (in other words if they heeded my advice on the gain and didn't make it too high). Aside from that and possibly the Schiit Ragnarok due to its ability to drive speakers, I'm not really in the market for amps.

In fact I keep getting this urge just to get into speakers sooner rather than later, to pay a friend to build some from a kit or buy some from Fritz.

Soooo Westone just pulled a Sony?

They were laying it on pretty confidently with the W40 spiel though.
