As long as you make sure to buy from reputable sellers, you're fine using Rakuten. I was less than impressed with a few experiences I had with them, but I was buying from mid tier sellers (Beach Camera, Platinum Micro). Beach Camera shipped my SSD (Yes, I know, it's an SSD so no damage) in a large box with no packing material. Absolutely zero packing material. Platinum Micro was in the packaging state for 4 days before I cancelled my order.
 
Buy.com, Adorama, etc are all good sellers to buy from.

It's no more risky than buying off ebay.
 
Just choose a marketplace seller with decent feedback.
 
Don't buy something from a seller with 1.5 star rating and be surprised if something shady happens.
 
Just be cautious.
