The Continuation Of The Sony Walkman 1Z/1A Thread!

I'm really glad you like it!

You could try checking out other regions, like J, or even CEV - it may help a little with the upper mids/lower treble.

On the Walkman One firmware you can change the region in the settings file - change the region, save the settings file (CTRL+S works in Notepad), disable Mass Storage mode, and restart the player.
Thank you! I changed the region to J tonight, and will see what I think over the next couple of days.

My immediate thought is that the bass depth and texturing has lessened, and I enjoy bass enough that I might prefer MX3, but I’ll give my ears a couple of days to adjust and might try CEV later. Choices, choices! 😄

Hey guys, I am hearing some clicking sound from my 1A while booting (exactly 3 times) I can hear the same click (just once) couple secs after the display turns off when sitting idle, also when it’s resumed back the same clicking sound happens once. Is this normal?

Likely normal, there are mechanical relays that make clicking sounds when changing formats/bitrates etc.

The NW-WM1A seems to have more reverb and spaciousness with Tom Sawyer by Rush, compared to NW-WM1Z. The 1Z seems warmer, deeper, yet closer. I can see myself being in a NW-WM1A mood one day, and a NW-WM1Z mood the next. Will try again at NW-WM1Z 500 hour mark. Right now 1A sounds more refined, but it was in the same boat at 200 hours.
they have to be on same fw and region to compare!

There are also relays on the output to the 4.4mm.
Thanks buddy! It was the relays on the 4.4 mm output. I have been leaving my cable attached, just disconnected and it no more clicks while booting. That was stupid lol

This is really good to know for new owners like me, though, so I’m glad you brought it up!

May I advice you to check out this brand called VanNuys? They make many specialty pouches, hand made in Japan. If you are already splashing money out for a premium music player and are looking for the Japanese equivalent in protection, perhaps you could consider that brand.

Allow me to link it to you here: https://www.vannuys.co.jp/official/

Disclaimer: Not sponsored or paid, am a fan of the brand and would like to buy their pouch for my future IER-Z1R
Thanks for sharing! These look very cool, unfortunately VanNuys does not ship internationally (at the moment, anyway) 😞.

I checked two of my favorite bag-makers, Peak Design and Timbuk2, but neither have a small/snug-fitting solution. The search continues for a softer/bag-like solution than the FatBear… 😅

Same new user here, I hope you are enjoying the dap as much as I do.

Thanks to you guys, I just got the FATBEAR case. It is perfect for my use. I don’t think there is a better protection for 1A (did my share of online research) Had never spend so much money on a DAP so getting the best protection was very important. I try to baby my gear but accidents do happen so a tough protective case is what I was looking for. I don’t think with the case it looks super bulky but then again I am a sucker for rugged looks, it is slightly more bigger but nothing crazy. I have relatively smaller hand but didn’t find FATBEAR uncomfortable in anyways to use infact it grips better compared to the stock cover.

Yeah the Fat Bear is what I meant as being the "thick one". This DAP is pretty heavy, I dont expect it to survive any level of drop.
BTW has anyone bought these?

I wonder whether they fit that snugly, and if it does, will it fit a WM1A with a FatBear Case inside? There are multiple versions of these things, ones that's thick but lean, one that's cheaper, one that's thin but wide, etc.
I guess they knew everyone love their one carry fits all huh?

The only one that specifically mention WM1A/Z is only the first one btw, the other's just showing a mockup of it. Not sure whether they are actual size or not.
Big rec on the Fat Bear, yes it will protect the body in the event of a drop think like a Casio G-Shock. The ribbed silicon case is designed to absorb and dissipate shock.

Fat Bear offers both soft & hard cases for the WM1

There's nicer looking case's on the market, however once gravity is a factor you'll be happy the Fat Bear delivered as promised...

Try Region E that will bring back the bass and push the highs with great resolution or Region TW for the bass with a slight trade off in staging & resolution. MX3 is similar to E, however too resolving for some (tiring) and lacks some features such as BT remote. Region J plays very safe resultantly rolls off both bass & treble. As ever much is related to what's plugged into the DAP :)

I mean just something that fits in your hand with THAT level of sound! We have MrWalkman to thank!

It truly is incredible. Glad we have another convert.
Yes- the size/portability of such an incredible, close-to-reference sound source is what really bowls me over. Thank you so much, @MrWalkman ! ❤️🤜🤛

Obviously everyone has to decide what is comfortable and appropriate to use in public with regards to headphones.?I would not use my Stellia, but my Shures (closed-backs or IEMs) would be fine, in my case.

To close out the current exploration of settings/regions: WM1Z + MX3 + Plus v2 is still the best combination for my gear and ears.

For harsher/treble-forward recordings I can simply toggle Direct off and use vinyl and analog amp (Type A high) with EQ (2K/4K/8K with a -1.0 dip currently). How brilliant it is to have a simple on/off toggle for multiple settings like this!

I continue to love the WM1A and be grateful for the members of this thread for their contributions. I never would have bought this particular model without it- there are so few professional reviews of the WM1A- atrocious, really.

…and I just saw this, thanks @Queen6 ! 🤜🤛

I’ll give region E a go later tonight, otherwise toggling Direct off for the few very treble-hot albums I have would work well as I mentioned in my post.
