There are times, maybe 30%, where I want a more neutral presentation. The NW-WM1A is a lovely DAP. It will always have my heart. LPG still gets used also.
That's the thing that makes me a little hesitant to get the 1Z, would I miss the neutral/mids of the 1A. The descriptions of the bass and soundstage are otherwise very appealing and totally up my alley

I always intended to keep both, because I have moody audio signature preferences.

I'd have to sell my 1A.
Having a long history with Sony portable devices I am tuned to it's V shaped classic sound and I actually didn't truly like the 1A when I first upgraded from my ZX300. My ears may have evolved to the more neutral 1A character, but I'm sure they'll embrace the 1Z.

I am unsure whether this is a provider for such a thing (I've never contacted them because my WM1A was purchased BNIB only this past April), but I have this link bookmarked, so at some point, someone must have recommended them. If you do contact them, kindly let us know in this thread if they are a candidate for battery service---> https://www.unitedradio.com/industries-we-serve/consumer/

Yes I believe this firm is linked to from Sony's website.
So I guess nobody has yet to replace their battery? Are people still getting good battery life? My 1Z has minimal hours on it since 2017 however I believe battery life also degrades with time.

There has been reports of people approaching 8-10.000 hours use and still getting decent play time on a charge. I had my battery replaced as part of the Nayparm mod after 4 years and 3.000 hours and the original battery at that point still gave me 20 hours play time and a weeks stand by which was essentially what it gave from day one

The NW-WM1A seems to have more reverb and spaciousness with Tom Sawyer by Rush, compared to NW-WM1Z. The 1Z seems warmer, deeper, yet closer. I can see myself being in a NW-WM1A mood one day, and a NW-WM1Z mood the next. Will try again at NW-WM1Z 500 hour mark. Right now 1A sounds more refined, but it was in the same boat at 200 hours.

How many hours do you have on the NW-WM1A? Mine changed a bunch between 200 and 500 hours.

Just clocked 700. After several firmware evolutions + region changes, acquiring more gear, expanding my music tastes and collection I have lost any constant point of reference, but I could swear it has sweetened with age.

It is the same as 1A

Indeed, it's basically the same board, with certain different variants of resistors and capacitors (with same values), and 256GB instead of 128.

This is how WM1A can get the WM1Z sound.

Has anyone ever had issues with Folders on their Walkman? I have 13 albums by The Beatles and when I move them to my Walkman, no matter how I move them, they create a "Database Error". If I view them in recently added there is no issue, but if I select Artist and scroll once I get to The Beatles it will give me the database error pop up. and I notice that the artist has "--" instead of showing "13" as the number of albums for the artist.
All of my music is properly tagged and the rest of my 10236 songs are fine. If I go to folder view I can view the albums and play them. Any Ideas of what I might be able to do or test to fix this?
