I have been wanting to get a "better" closed can for my main rig. Right now I am using the D2000 which is fun at times but fails in two ways: the bass is a little bloated and it doesn't isolate very much (which I need when the TV is on). I was thinking of D7000 or Shure 840. However, I am thinking the D7000 won't be that much better than just changing the cable on the D2000 and perhaps using some Dynamax on the cups (which I may decide to do myself to see if it helps). As for the Shure 840, I wasn't all that impressed with them at CanJam so I am not sure that is going to satisfy me. I tried UncleEric's DT48 and thought they were pretty good but didn't spend that much time with them. I know that they are very bass light or maybe bass non-existent but that is ok. I still have the D2000 when I want a bit of thump. Right now, my other pair of closed cans I have at home is the AKG K271 which I find to be a little tinny. There is just something missing. I have a pair of ESW9 which I love but they do not isolate at all (and I use them in the office).

How would you compare the DT48 to the K271 or K501 (both of which I own)?

I plan to use the DT48 mainly with a tube amp (WA5 LE). So I am planning to get the DT48E 200 ohm if I pick one up. Is there any indication that the 25ohm model is the better model to get. Does anyone have the 200ohm model?

Thanks for the help.

I sold DT48 and kept K271S. To me K271S does about everything better.

Hmm, now I am confused. I thought that the DT48 would wins hands down but evidently not. What sort of improvement did you see when you got the upgraded cable for the K271?

You can tell based on the reading in this thread. As hard as I tried to like them doing intense A/B ing with K271S for 2 weeks, I just couldn't accept them as replacement. On its own they are not bad, actually, I kind of liked them with metal.

The 271 must really be special if they can better the DT48's mid range, timbre, detail, resolve, tonal accuracy, speed, imaging, and clarity..

Has anyone found any other pads that fit the DT48 yet, and if so, how do they sound?

If not, does anyone know anything that might fit?

Update: DT880 pads fit, trying them in a few minutes lol

Update 2: More comfy heheh

Soundstage seems larger.

It sounds okay, but I can't describe it... I'm not good at describing audio.

It's brighter, for sure.

Something sounds a bit off, though. I'm not sure how to describe it. I think it's lacking a bit of low-end.

I switched back to the regular pads and yep, it's the low-end. It practically disappears. Soundstage becomes pretty big, though.

Verdict: DT880 velour pads not recommended.

It's good to know that the other Beyer pads fit, though. Anyone want to try the Beyer genuine leathers or perhaps the JMoney Audio leathers? xD

Maybe the K271 just works better with his system than the DT48. It can be hard to judge a headphone because everyone has a different setup which tweaks the sound. It would be interesting if some people collaborated to come up with a standard audio rig which could be used for testing headphones. That way there would be a baseline for people to judge sound from.

That's interesting but at the same time surprising. I assume you have heard the DT48E (25 ohms?) at their best through your GS-1 or Glite... I really have a hard time thinking of what the K271S are doing objectively better... If it is down to a subjective impression due to the frequency balance presentation of the DT48 (weak low bass, treble with no sparkle), I could understand it, but technically (resolution, transcient response, mid range, speed, tonal accuracy) there should be no comparison at all.

Hmm nice to see different opinions.

Shamu, when do you get the headphones?

K501 are famous for their excellent behaviour with acoustic and vocals... I let my wife (they usually have excellent ears) the other day listened to both K501 and DT48 on some vocal recordings... You don't want to know what she thought of K501

Just throw in Chesky Demo CD and A/B two on each track, the best test ever to see all DT48 shortcomings.
My main test rig was Chord DAC64 as a source with GS-1. That's where the difference was the most dramatic.
I did not feel K271 lacking anything technically either, in fact I found them having better resolution and much better mid-range. DT48 were a pinch speedier, but that's it.
