The tick sound could either be the switch turning to the on position like a rocker switch may do, or simply a surge of power running through the circuit board to turn the device on. I wouldn't worry about it. How do you like it so far?

Just got the C5 after trying the E11, C421, C&C BK and Digizoid ZO (the new model) and gotta say I like it better than every portable amp I've tried.  Good bass boost - not muddy and with a pair of Ultrasone Performance 840's as my portable setup it is really clean basshead material.  Good synergy together fed by an iPod Touch.

Bassheads!! I'm a bit underwhelmed with the Fidelios, what other open-basshead cans would you recommend?

HE-400, HD650, SR325, DT990?

Definitely recommend the HE-400.  Fed from a vintage amp they thump really nicely.

Pretty much all orthos are good. The he 400s and dt990s are in the list so definitely recommended. I have T90s which are not basshead out of the box but are capable of heavy bass with EQ and an amp, so I would recommend those if you are fine with EQing and want something that reproduces exactly what is put into them. I would say either or this or T90s/T1s are your choices for open cans with good bass. There aren't many with good bass, but there are a few gems out there.

I've been looking to upgrade a long time from M-Audio Q40 but it seems I cannot find a good candidate to switch to that satisfies all my needs. It can't possibly be the case a $120 headphone is my personal "holy grail"? It certainly has proven me it "works" well for me sound-wise since I keep mastering on a hobby-level with probably over 500 or so masterings in total now.

I often keep adjusting professionally mastered tracks a little bit and people generally think I can keep up mastering quality-wise with those 10 grand or whatever acuostically treated studios with Genelec speakers.

But I keep wanting to get some new "toy" experience but if it's not as satisfying as I already have I don't see any point.

What exactly are you looking for? I had them and liked them, but have since found better for my personal tastes.
