@Lohb

Would the HE-400 be good with rap and rnb because they are the genre i mainly listen to I only listen to EDM and rock sometimes

@TheHeadPhoneGuy

I didn't mean that the SZ2000 had too much bass what I was saying is pretty much what Spurxiii was saying that besides the killer bass it was lacking with everything else

@RoMee

Does the WS99 have as much bass as the M100? If not does it play well with EQ without distorting? because then I could just use the digizoid FS to up the bass if it doesn't have that much bass

  What are your guys' picks for best in-ears $100 and under? Is there a significant price/performance increase going from the $50 range to the $100 range?

  HiSoundAudio Wooduo 2

i bought these and it is the most disappointing purchase i've made on headphones/iem's.  the bass was plentiful and deep.  but that is where it ended for me.  i thought everything else sounded mediocre at best from the mids, highs, soundstage, separation..etc.  at the time, my other IEM's were the xiaomi piston2.  I traded off the wooduo 2 and kept the pistons.

Sorry you didn't like them.  I bought the Wooduo 2 for my son and he loves them.  I borrow them once in a while and they're not quite as awesome as my Sennheiser IE800, but pretty dang good for the $65 I paid for them.

I'm not the best writer/describer of things so I will quote a review by |joker| which I agree with 100% "The Wooduo 2 is HiSound’s idea of a proper basshead earphone, one that produces the lowest frequencies without any drop-off or distortion. In addition to some of the most powerful subbass on the market, the Wooduo 2 offers surprisingly good clarity and prominent, well-extended treble. Complete with a unique – if a bit gaudy – aesthetic, the Wooduo 2 is an all-around competent basshead delight."

It's really hard to decide with so many options and no real comparable objective data.
So far Im considering

Vsonic Gr07 Bass edition     $125  50Ω +/- 10% >105dB (@ 500 Hz)   Max 50mw
Audio Technica ATHCKS99  $100  16 ohms        106 dB/mW              Max 100mw
Brainwaves S5                    $100  16ohms         110dB at 1mW          Max 40mW
HiSoundAudio Wooduo 2      $75    16 ohms       110 ± 2dB at 1Khz/m

Really leaning towards the Gr07's. Seems to be the most capable on paper. What do you guys think? Any others I should consider?

i bought them based on joker's review as well.  i think i paid $50.  it does not change my opinion on them.  i traded them for a pair of creative aurvana 3 and the guy i traded them to wanted to trade back immediately after listening to them.  maybe mine were defective, but it still makes me cringe every time i see someone recommending them.

Thx, Thx1000 that article did help. But it also confused me more as well.
Whatever headphone I get I plan on using a custom eq for them, something like +3db@45hz +6db@35hz +9db@25hz. So I dont need a headphone with alot of bass out of the box as much as I need a headphone with the headroom to be boosted. When I listen to bass music I will probably be cutting everything over 45hz to get this result.
So even though the Vsonic GR07 BE's are not in the basshead category would they not have more capable hardware to be boosted than the "basshead" models?
Should I be avoiding phones labeled as "iem"?

iem is "in ear monitor" the type of headphones you stick in your ear

You will need to determine your preferred sound signature type: bassheadwarm and smoothV-shaped, or balanced. Then your budget should narrow down your search.  If you can demo in a store that would be great, but if you cannot try them then you need to read up on reviews and recommendations here on Head-fi and on other websites.

I personally prefer not to use eq (too much overthinking on my part where to boost and how much)

Good luck in your search.
