The AKG K7XX Massdrop First Edition Thread

The 400i has better details and clarity due to the beautiful vocals and highs. The K7XX has some very nice highs and vocals, too, but the added warmth is what makes it slightly less detailed than the 400i.

Should I use the high impedance setting on both my Fiio e12 and NFB-12 for these headphones?

try both settings & see how you like it. the akg k7xx should work fine with low gain, but you can use high gain if desired.

From what I have read, the idea is to keep the dials away from the extremes.  I usually try to keep it as close to half way (5) as possible.  If low gain at a 9 gets you the same volume as a 4 on high gain, use high gain.  Similarly, if a 2 on high puts you where a 6 on low would be, use low.  I hope that makes sense, I am terrible at explaining that.

Got this shorter cable from eBay. Came to under 310 with free delivery. Seems just as well built as V-moda's audio only cable which I also have.

If you liked that one, check this one out.
I think it is made better and certainly looks much nicer. I also bought the one that you mentioned and have them side by side.

May as well not ask about SQ. I almost never can detect differences in cables. I did swap the above with the one you mention and with the stock cable. There was no detectable differences to my ears.

That, and how much signal your source provides... Volume knob position is really irrelevant except if you are in a low range where there is channel imbalance.

Added to watch list. I like this cable at present (good quality, looks cool in braided red/black) so if it shows any issues over coming weeks etc then I shall get that one!

Any ideas (from believers only) that have found a third party cable for the k7xx that improves sq?

The Yamaha HPH-MT220 sounds like the right choice for your needs. The AKG 553 is awkward with finding a seal. It's not something that would be comfortable around your neck.
The Yamaha can be purchased from Amazon at a good price. If you don't like them, then they have their amazing return policy. You won't be able to do that with massdrop.

Is that return policy with all headphones sold from Amazon or just yamaha?

I have an extremely hard time imagining the sound that would come out of my headphones after installing a $300 cable would justify the price. I seriously don't understand how they could cost so much. I can understand the difference between a $14 cable and a $39 one, a quality cable costs money to manufacture. I can even understand a cable costing $79... But beyond that I start becoming a bit skeptical.

I mean seriously... that thing even comes with it's own payment plan :xf_eek:

Thanks for your thoughts, but I am looking for someone that knows of a high quality cable and has first hand experienced it improving the sound of a k7xx or k712. You are entitled to you opinion, but be careful making statements like this that are not based in something you have actually tested.
