Yes, they definitely have great soundstage. I suggest you upgrade the stock cable on the 712s I opted for the moon audio Silver Dragon Cable on mine and the difference was anything but subtle. The 712s with the Silver Dragon cable is much better resolved. If you liked the Akg 712s with the stock cable you will like them a lot more with Siver dragon cable.

How can you know that? How do you know his taste?
That is a valid point. But I like what the 712s bring to the game. I have yet to find a headphone that suits my listening preferences. But I suspect he might have similar tastes since he likes the soundstage performance of the headphone. I use to have AKG 701s which if anything are a bit harder to drive. I literally wore out my AKG 701s after many years of use the headphone band disintegrated. I had thousands of hours of use on my 701s. They did share a lot of the traits that the AKG 712 possess. When I bought my 701s a lot of the headphone amps they made back then did not mate very well with the 701s. The Burson 160 paired very well with the AKG 701 and one of the reviews mentioned that.

The right-side driver is wired to the output on the left side via just the spring steel in the headband. If cables are a bottleneck, so the heck is that.

Wait, those metal bands are actually giant + and - conductors? That's actually pretty cool.

Yup, AKG's been doing it that way forever. I have a mid-pro Sextett from '74-'76 or so, same thing. Wires go from the + and - terminals on the right driver, soldered directly to the headband spring steel, then on the other side wires are soldered from the other ends of the headband spring steel to the cable/connector. It's probably safe to assume that any AKG headphone from any era, if it has the K240-like headband with the two thin metal bands like this, it probably works the same way. K240, K275, K612, K702, K712, Q701, etc etc.

Steel springs are transparent for the sound. Instead of external cable which is RLC chain.
I think the much more likely explanation is that all conductors are transparent.

Quick question:
Is there e Pro and a non-Pro version of the K712?
I might have a chance to buy a cheap pair, but it is listes as just "K712", and since I know very little about AKG, I need to ask, so I don't buy something different from what I think it is :)
