The AKG K712 Pro Support and Impressions Thread
Jan 26, 2017 at 2:15 AM Post #4,877 of 6,349
Just ordered the K712 Pro, despite owning the Q701. I couldn't help myself... and they don't have the bumps. I became very disenchanted with the Q701s for a while, until I discovered that they are very susceptible to amplification. Anyway, I am now (or shortly will be) a 2x AKG owner. My Q701s were made in Austria. I won't be so lucky with the Amazon K712, I imagine. Does it matter? Apart from the link with Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Mahler etc? O.K. It matters!

  Indeed my K712 need more power than my HD600/650..

Agreed.
Power for H650 with 1V voltage as an example:
U=1[V]
R=300[Ohms]
P=Power in Watts[W]
P=(U^2)/R=1/300=0.0033333[W]=3.33[mW]

Power for K712 with 1V voltage as an example:
U=1[V]
R=60[Ohms]
P=Power in Watts[W]
P=(U^2)/R=1/60=0.01666666[W]=16.66[mW]
It is a power 5 times bigger than for the HD650
For the same voltage, the current is five times bigger.

That's true but you also have to consider the dB SPL/V because most times low impedance headphones need lower voltage to get the same volume.
But since both have like 104dB/V your calculation is correct.
Well it's correct anyway, but if the k712 had like 110dB/V it wouldn't make sense to calculate it like this.

So after months and months of trying to get the K7xx's (Customs charges to india can be hit and miss) finally ordered the K712's instead. I'll be listening to them at home and at my office too, with my home setup being FLAC > foobar2000 ASIO > Xonar STX > Headphones. Wanted to know if the STX amp would pair with it well (i'm sure it can drive it, but i hear the 712's take better to tubes/hybrids)

Would a Vali 2 work, or any other solidstate alternatives?
I might also get a Dragonfly black for my office setup for the 712's since the Fulla 2 is not available.

Any suggestions/help/mild annoyance at this post will be highly appreciated, folks!

My K712 PROs have arrived. Have settled them in to listen to Naim Radio for a few hours.

So my smsl m6 came today, so i finally got a chance to listen to these amped. Seems to be a lot of headroom with this dac/amp. First impressions are improvements across the board with sound quality. Some strange sibilance in treble seems to be putting me off though. Will see if this improves with some time.

Guys, I have the in ears Sennheiser IE80 which I absolutely love due to their HUGE soundstage. Lately I've been thinking about getting the AKG K712 as its costs only 217 euros. Would it be a decent upgrade comparing to the IE80s which are my daily drivers?

I get that, but after all they both produce "sound".
If you compare the IE80s to AKG 712.. would the AKGs produce a better sound comparing to the iems? specially in terms of: soundstage, bass, treble and clarity.

I just got mine yesterday, I'm loving them for both music and gaming.
If the price is right to you, and you want a great all-rounder over war I would do it.
They are light and comfy too.

Best is to probably to go demo them at a store if that's an option. Some pro-audio stores might have them.
It's comparing apples to oranges, but soundstage and clarity is something the I find the K712 excel at, for 217 euro you really can't go wrong with them.

Does anyone have input on the benefits of the certain types?
I'm not considering the sheepskin, but I'm debating on angled or non angled pleather, velour or hybrid.
Nothing wrong with these pads, but now that I have several headphones that I love - I'd like the option and backup, so I'm planning to order for 3 headphones, but depending on which seems preferred for each.
For example, not going for angled with the X2 as the drivers are angled and word says that's not a good match..
Thanks
