The AKG K712 Pro Support and Impressions Thread

My K712 headband adjustment creaks like crazy. If I chew anything, turn my head, look down, or whatever, I get a very annoying series of creaks. Does anyone else have this problem, and is there a known solution? Thanks.

Honestly, I don't think it's the headband - it's the ball-and-socket joint on the cups that makes the noise.  The original K701 used a shiny plastic that seemed slicker - maybe it was the chrome ring?

Hey Beezarman, you were right. It IS the joint on the cups. Since you knew better than me what was causing the noise, maybe you know better than me how to make it stop :)

So...is this a poor man's HD800?

No as the sound signature is quite different. The K712 is on the darker and warmer side, the HD 800 is cold and bright. The K701 is more similar to the HD 800 than the K712, the HD 800 is still quite different than the K701 though. It's a bit holographic sounding, but not like how the HD 800 is.

In my opinion, it's a fairly poor comparison for the AKG. I would agree it hits above its weight, but the HD 800 is simply in another class.

Just got these headphones yesterday... Best I've heard so far. (Driving them out of a lowly Marantz NR1403... There's audible hiss set at 95db+, which is about 20 notches more than I would ever listen.)

I tried the K701 a few years ago, but disliked the weird plasticky sound that made me feel like I was listening through a straw. The K712 is pretty close to perfection, IMO. Does anyone want to buy some HD650's with a bit of paint missing?

Good to hear that!

I believe plenty are looking for it at FS section :)

I found the HD800 much more coherent and dynamic than the K812.  The K712 Pro is still a great headphone and I would prefer it to the odd sounding and extremely overpriced K812.

Think of the K812 pro as a poor mans alternative HD800. Similar sound and not finicky with amplification and easy to drive with it's low z. The HD800 is another class once you spend the effort to buy a complmenting amp and source. Not cheap. Though the Matrix Mstage is claimed to be really good with the HD800's.

Throwing random tube amplification at the HD800 will also not do any good. Very similar to the Stax O2.

First of all the K812 is the same price as the HD800.  Second both can be driven well with an inexpensive amp like the O2 or O2 and ODAC Combo.  If you are going to spend $1500 on a headphone go with the well known and well tested HD800.

Perhaps the K712 Pro can be viewed as a poor man's HD800, but they have quite a few key differences.

You missed out what I was saying. Yes they are the same price but if you're planning to buy and subsequently own the HD800's then prepare to spend big $ (also subjective amongst users) to get them to sound its best. It is one of the few headphones in the market that one needs to pay attention to with amplification.

Your second statment is a bit silly, even a Cmoy can drive the HD800's. Not properly and not to its potential, far cry from it, same goes to the O2 which sounds like absolute crap with the HD800's. Been there done that with the HD800's 3 times, low and high end gear.
