Technics EAH-AZ100 - Reviews & Impressions

Jan 29, 2025 at 12:30 PM Post #196 of 364
My AZ-100s arrived today. There is more bass than AZ-80s I also have but not dark sounding or boomy.

They are different in default sound but still seem wide and clear. Using EQ achieved the sound I seek.

Tested on LDAC through an Ibasso DX180 using high definition FLAC files.

I have no problem at all with fit or seating in ear.

They aren't as stable for me as the az80s, but if you try using the Xelastec 2s they are practically glued to your ears and with more audio detail.
Same here, still prefer more solid in ear seating of AZ80 when exercising, with AZ100 it's almost like they can fall out any moment.
But perhaps smaller ears benefit more from AZ100 smaller size factor.

Sweet! Those are my fave eartips.

I'm overall very happy with the sound...Even tho they don't de-throne the Final Audio ZE8000 MK II as the best sounding TWS that I've tried. At the same time it isn't really a fair comparison due to the ZE 8000s being these huge "stem-tws", with a large case and bad battery life. The timbre and soundstage on the ZE8000 MK IIs is insane for a tws! But yeah, the battery life is bonkers, I'm waiting for a new version...:)

I do wish for two software features...

  • Separate the two ambient mode, I need to use both for difference scenarios! Can't really change between them without going into the app. I want to have access to both via the customizable touch control system. Let's call the two modes "Ambient Attention" and "Ambient Aware". Could even add a feature for the Aware mode were you can set a volume level.
  • Confirmation for each step when you use two/three touch control. Would probably mean that the touch controls should be slightly delayed. But I do prefer getting a confirmation sound for each touch that the earbud registers.
The AZ 100 are the best complete package that I've tried to date...The sound is good, case is small, the app/features are class leading, ANC/Ambient is also very good (prob just below the Airpods/XM5). The feature were you can switch between ANC+music and ambient+pause music is something that I really value, only a handfull of TWS support this essential feature.

Finally every android user gets the best out of these since they do support LDAC.

Did you have LE Audio enabled? Because I noticed that sometimes with that there was left-right latency, which effect creates an effect where the sound stage is extremely wide and thin. I had that on at first.
I was not using LE. It was just a weak sound overall, the bass lacked impact.

Wow
'Weak sound' is most definitely not my first feeling with them on.
And they have bass impact.

Something sounds wrong to me in your description even if very short.
It might have been bad seal ..(as for big nozzles )

I had been a fan of Tz700, in my opinion it is one of the best single DD IEM even now.
So I pull the trigger to try this az100.
Previously, I owned ATH TWX9, Anima ANW01, Aviot Z1PNK for TWS.
This is so far the best TWS I ever heard up until now.
It doesn't have incoherency that I didn't like from Z1PNK, while also an upgrade from TWX9 and ANW01 in soundstage, clarity and detail.

And yes, az100 remind me of tz700 in some of the driver sound characteristics. Especially the treble extension.
Initially, using direct preset, the bass is too boomy for my taste.
After some EQ, it fixes most of my issue with its tonal.
Although the ANC On seems to increase the quantity of bass and mid quite a bit.

What method do you use to take the buds out of the case? You're pusing the buds outwards and dislodging from the magnets in the case first right?

Yes, that's what I figured out to be the easiest way but still when grabbing them and turning in the right upward position in my hand it feels quite tricky and slippery, couldn't find a good grip to hold them secure in my hand when placing them in the ears or back in the case.
I'm always worried about dropping them accidentally...never had this kind of problem with the AZ80s or stem design earbuds.

Edit:
Has anyone noticed random hiccups/pops/stutters (not sure which word describes it best) whilst listening to music? It's barely noticable and only lasts for about a quarter sec or even less but still annoying, happens total randomly, sometimes 2-3 times within a song and then good with the next 5-6 tracks. Total random.
It's not Internet issue as it happens with downloaded songs too.
I only used it on LDAC with 'best effort' settings (tried the optimised audio as well, same issue), with Tidal flac files.
It's not my phone or the app, the AZ80s work flawlessly with the same settings.
Did I get a lemon?
Tried factory reset but didn't help.

Only stutters I occasionally get is when have LDAC pushed to 905kbs (or whatever the max setting is) and even then far less than with the AZ80s.

One quirk I hope they do fix is a shrieking noise when you push the buds while in your ears. It’s related to ANC as only occurs when that is on.

I know this noise, my QC Ultra earbuds did that too when adjusted the buds in my ears but the AZ100s haven't done this since I got them.
I constantly adjust and twist them in my ears as I'm still trying to figure out the best tip size but there are no sudden high-pitch noises, absolutely dead silent in this regard.

That’s interesting - I run it off an LG G8 on Android 10. That said, I noticed when I reverted to the stock tips it reduced dramatically and has almost stopped entirely. Maybe the Dunu S7S XL rub up against a sensor or something. They are certainly larger

Performance can and does vary between device combinations. For my Windows 11 PC with Intel AX200/210 PCIe cards, my AirPods Max are flawless with great range, but my Bose QuietComfort Ultra earbuds are unusable due to audio glitching and poor range. For the Bose, I got random dropouts and panning using Creative BT-W6 and Floogoo FMA100 transmitters, but the Avantree C81-PC has been flawless with great range. Windows would have been sending AAC, but the other three were all aptX Adaptive. Thus, I wouldn't assume that another transmitter wouldn't do better with your AZ100 than your phone, even though your phone is flawless with the AZ80. If possible, I would experiment with other transmitters and codecs to try and get a better idea of compatibility.

Bought these on a whim. Not a TWS guy, but pretty good, in fact. Any comparison with REX5?
