First thing, new here and appreciate insights and recommendations. I'm somewhat disadvantaged in that there is place locally that carries many of the higher end products I can try on and form my own opinion.  I have a good sized noggin so fit is very important, something in the $250-ish range for mostly jazz/classical listening so looking at Denon, AT and Beyerdynamics. Opinions greatly appreciated, easy on the head squeeze please...

Thanks, MetsFan

Thanks for the response.  I have a Yamaha RX V665 receiver for home use but also travel quite a bit (which is why I'm looking at closed for the isolation) and will be using with an IPhone.

I'm very happy with the Denon D2000. They're comfy, and I'm loving how they sound. They sound OK with an iPhone, but really come to live with an amp. I'm planning on bringing them on my next flight, but will probably get a portable amp.

I second the D2000 recommendation.  I use mine at home with a Matrix M-Stage and at work with one of Gary's PA2v2 portables and the comfort is only 10% of why I keep them on my head for as long as possible.

Appreciate the feedback, do the D2000's fit well on a big head?

While I found them uncomfortable (narrow head), I understand that for wider heads the SRH840 is very comfortable. Very good sound, but slightly lacking heavy bass. Otherwise a fairly neutral (though mid-centric) sound.

The DT770 is extremely comfortable (as are all Beyers of this style), but make sure that you go for the 600 Ohm version if you do.

The Denons are extremely comfortable as well, but on me fit a bit loosly and are not known for sonic isolation.

Toss-up now between the DT770 and the D2000...anyone have experience with both? Also, if they require an amp, any suggestions?

Appreciate the advise, very helpful forum.

I have the dt770, dt880, and dt990. That should say something about how comfortable they are since they are basically the same cans.

The dt770 pro are 80 ohms. My iPhone drives them fine (not ideal, but no complaints). If you don't find the iPhone alone good enough, look into the FiiO products, such as the E1 and E5. For the price, I've heard you can't be disappointed. My friend is using the E1 to drive his dt880/250.

Both my dt880 and dt990 are 600 ohms. I've never tried to drive them with my iPhone, so I couldn't tell yah if the iPhone itself will suffice.

I have had the DT770 in both 250 and 600 Ohm. Not so great out of iPod. I have not tried a lower ohm version.
The D2000 was just fine (drive- wise) out of the iPhone. Better (no, duh) amped, but they are very easy to drive.
