right now i have an HD580 with HD650 cables and the HD600 cups. they're alright, but the only thing that annoys me is that it doesn't "wow" me anymore. i think it's the sloppy midbass that is to blame. it makes everything seem so dull.

do the DT770s have the same problems? i love the things i've been reading on the forums especially the crazy bass.

Methinks you need an amp.

I don't see one in your sig or profile. A nice Gilmore Lite or M^3 would take care of your sloppy midbass.

Have you thought about building an amp?

i thought the e-mu 0404 USB was sufficient. that's why i switched to it from my zhaolu 2.5a. i'm a bit scared of building my own electronics, but maybe this is good opportunity to get my hands dirty. i'm kind of strapped for cash so spending above $150 is a big no no. should i buy a cheap amp or is there an easy-to-build and cheap amplifier out there?

I would go with something like a Headroom AirHead amp. $100 and you are on your way. This as the first amp I bought and us it now for my desktop amp since my Hornet is always hooked to my Classic 160. With the AirHead you don't have to get an interconnect unless you want to, the mini-to-mini SQ is pretty good. Hope this helps...

i also recommend getting a decent amp. i almost peed my pants when i heard my hd580 amped the first time.
the built-in amp in 0404 is "ok" but i dont think it's powerful enough to drive hd580.
i recommend corda headsix, you can often find it used around $125 on FS section. it's good enough to drive my hd650, and i think it'll do a good job on hd580. go-vibe v6 was also good for hd580.

that pro-ject headbox ii looks sweet. i'll do some research on that amp. i'm just a bit puzzled about how to buy it over their website.

now i'm really excited to get an amp. anyone know of a cheap amplifier that has a 1/4" phone output? i seem to have lost my 1/4" to 1/8" senn adapter...

yup, i noticed that qqq, thanks, but i'm using an hd650 cable.

i went to a local dealer to buy a pro-ject head box II, but they didn't have it in stock, so i'll have to wait a little bit. me = excited.

How much do those go for in the States? I was just in a hi-fi shop yesterday (in Finland) and they seemed to have pretty much the whole product range in stock. I'll probably get to use one next week when I go back and audition a couple CD players with my own headphones, which include both an HD580 with 650 cable and DT770-80. Should be interesting.

If you exchange your unamped HD580 against a DT770, you exchange boring against bad IMO. You better tune up your Senns (as the others have stated) and buy an additional MS1 later, for the non-Senn moments in life.

the DT770 are far from bad . . .

in fact, they're quite good!

thislittlepiggy, no matter what you've read, head-boxes are very good amps. In fact, i have one in my amp inventory. Good neutral sound, a "wire with gain". Many people on the net have opinions on things they don't have or used. You gotta "filter" those reviews.
