This has been beaten to death I am sure - but can I get some quick impressions comparing the 009 vs the 009S?

Too subtle to make a big difference?
I chose 009, 009S sounded too thin in female vocals (using Headamp's Blue Hawaii). Timbre was a bit off too.
Bass on 009 sounds a bit fuller than on 009S

I heard the opposite. 009 sounding thinner in the bass than 009S and 009 being a brighter headphone. This was 009/BHSE combo vs. 009S/KGGG and T8000.

I auditioned both on the same sound chain (Blue Hawaii + Holospring DAC + SU1 interface), so only the headphones were to account for any differences.

If I average impressions I have gathered: they are close; the 009 is more incisive, brighter, and lighter in the bass; while the 009S is tamer in the treble, smoother, and has slightly more bass energy.

Of course, as mentioned, I am just pointing to overlaps in the corpus of impressions I have gathered.

Have already ordered a Carbon and now deciding on which estat to get. The CRBN is another contender, lol.

009 vs 009S is very much a matter personal (musical) taste - and maybe the "Front End".
When I sold my 009, I had some people over for auditioning ; some preferred the 009, others the 009S.
For me the case was clear: the 009S is still here…

My Front End is kind of "transistor free Full Analog" (Step-Up Trafo, Tube Phono-stage, and - indirectly - into the AudioValve Solaris)
Digital sources , (Stax-driver) amp, etc., of course may alter such findings completely.

Conclusion: You Must Listen & Compare Yourself , preferably at YOUR system at home !! :)

Urs

Too many on Headfi fail to grasp the concept of SOURCE FIRST.

Your headphones are going to sound best with the best source you can use.

Feed them junk - they will sound like junk
Basic system building 101

I have the 009S with the BHSE and the HAP1es as the source. I really love the HAP1es as a complete storage, DSD output sounding fantastic & emotional and great to use with my iPad.
However, I have to ask the question, IS there something out there that is even better sounding?.
