Stax SR-009 Channel Imbalance Trouble / Driver Problem?

Doesn't that imply either a very loose tension in the membrane and/or very limited spacing between the stator and membrane?

Any fix of this type of issue seems likely to result in a marked change in the sound.

I don't think that there will be a dramatic difference in sound.  I'm sure that Stax knows what the right diaphragm tension is supposed to be.  However, when stretching or gluing the diaphragm, something could have gone just slightly wrong, and that could be the problem.  If I were to fix it, I would tension the diaphragm just a little more.   IMHO.

any differences at all in terms of sound signature?

Maybe my mind is playing tricks but it somehow sounds slightly more smooth with better controlled treble. I feel its very neutral and engaging without being bright. I won't say they are bright at all but if compared to sr007a , they just have more highs. Its a perfect headphone for people who dislike hd800 and various grado headphones for its brightness but also don't want a dark or laidback sound like maybe lcd2,hd650 or to a certain extant 007a with not so good amplification. I would say SR009 achieves an ideal balance for my taste.

I have to disagree with you here but IMO  the LCD 2 is neither dark or laid back.  In fact its the closest headphone i've heard to the 007 Mk1.  The MK1 is also often accused of being dark and laid back but in truth its just well balanced and natural not over bright or bloated bass.

The SR-007 mk1 provide much more detail in the highs than the LCD-2 even with the Stax amps. The LCD-2 gloss over the detail of acoustic instruments - they're detail killers. The SR-007 mk1 are the exact opposite in this regards - you hear acoustic instruments with all their detailed nuances. The LCD-2 and SR-007 mk1 are in completely different leagues in terms of sound quality!

I traded in my second pair for a third. All is good so far and hopefully this second production batch will be free of the channel imbalance issue.

I just sent mine back as well. Damn pity.

The left driver flaked out, so I guess that's the imbalance issue.

I had them just over a week when the sound became imbalanced and quieter on the left. Turning up the volume on the left only would result in very bad distortion where on the right it was fine.
