Of course I'm not going to remove the wool! I was talking about trimming it back. See previous posts about that.

the boominess is HUGE. I'm pretty sure that either it's a matter of me getting used to the Sigma sound or there's something wrong with the phones.

I've found out what the problem was.

It wasn't my Stax Sigmas.

It wasn't the amplifier.

It wasn't my imagination.

It was wax in my ears!

FIxed that, and now the Sigmas are just a little bassy but not boomy at all, except on a small number of very bassily mastered recordings (some very heavy rock).
