SR-60's failed - Considering AD700's?

So I've had my Grado SR-60's for 2 years now. They've always sounded great, and been pretty comfortable. I even bought the bowl pads for them. However, they are finally biting the dust. I have to bend the wire a particular direction even to get sound from the left ear, and there is a crackling sound. The headphone wire has always been twisting itself, so this is unsurprising. They look great on the outside, but there goes my $70, as I'm out of warranty.

So I'm after some open cans for less than $100. I will use them for both listening to exclusive Classical music, and for playing PC games, though music is the top priority. Comfort is a big thing, and I want them to be open. Been reading these forums for a while, but I would like to know what you guys think. I have a Fiio E5, if a particular pair of headphones will benefit for a cheap amp (my Grado's didn't).

Thanks!

From the ones I've tried:
Sennheiser HD555
AKG K501 (if anemic bass is not a problem)

They're closed, though. You meant the AD500/AD700, right?

I will throw in a vote for the HD555 or AD700.

The AD700 would probably be your best option. The MS-1 isn't a bad either, and considering you liked the SR60, they may be a good choice. The MS-1 has the same type of twisting cable though. The comfort/soundstage won't be as good as the AD700 either. The HD555 wasn't as good as the MS-1 or AD700 imo.

Find someone to fix your SR60 for ten bucks. It's an easy repair.

Maybe you could consider selling them for parts if you're not interested in repairing them. Surely you could get 30 or 40 bucks depending on overall condition.

Consider fixing your SR-60s. So long as the driver has not failed, it's easy. The earpieces can be opened up after warming the glue with a hot hair dryer. (Proceed with caution when you are working with heat!) It's really common for the cable inside to become intermittent or disconnected. I don't understand the design as I found nothing inside to anchor the cable and prevent this. Resolder the known good portion of the cable to the driver and you are good to go.

Thanks a whole bunch, guys! Sounds like I should investigate both repairing my Grados, and the AD500/700's, which I had actually not heard of previously, but look excellent! I hay just repair my Grados and sell them, and get the AD700's, they sound good. Not sure yet.

Hello, I was curious how to get someone to repair them? Grado wants $25+ shipping, and that's a bit much.

Also, is $78 a good price for the AD700's? I'm thinking about both repairing my Grado's and getting the AD700's, and yes, you guys are evil.
