Just wondered.

With all the talk of fidelity, sound stage, bass slam, sweet trebles etc etc.

What other sounds do people like to listen to?

I have a soft spot for internal combustion engines and cats washing themselves amongst others.

1. Tornados (good holographic imaging)
2. Thunder less than a mile away (good transient response )
3. a Big Fireworks show a couple of hundred yards away(alot of tone color there)
4. V8s(some serious symphonies to be heard in traffic)
5. Caves (good natural reverb)

I would like to hear more albums recorded in caves!

Nothing beats my next door's "talking on the phone" album at night.

It's so wonderful especially if you want to sleep or study at night.

I tried to put the cat in to demonstrate quiet delicate sounds
but dang it I just love the sound my .58 cal flintlock pistol makes
with a 50grain charge of black ....Booooooooooooooooooooooom

Yes, the cat sounds are hard to reproduce. I tried recording some but my mikes can't really capture the low level stuff.

On the other side of spectrum, cannon blasts are a real beast. The Telarc 1812 disc contains a real cannon blast, recorded from a 100 hundred yards away. You need something like 106dba horn speakers and 1,000watt amps to do that sucker justice!

Ka Boooooooooooom

Heres a photo of the noisey beast,
it cant quite compete with a cannon though!

I have not attempted to record anything yet as the moment I start that I will be concentrating on the act of recording and listening to the results with a critical ear, and wham! back to
square one listening to playback equipment and recordings
of moments now past, instead of savouring the best you are
ever going to hear, the thing itself!

Of course technical challenges are just as much fun too.

Ear deffenders for shooting, safe distance with Db meter for listening.

Ha! When I shoot (only at paper targets and clay, which is promptly recycled along with the spent cartridges) I put in earplugs rated at at least 30db, then I put on ear-muff sound protectors rated at at least another 30db... Takes the fun out of the sound but lets me still hear afterwards...

Sounds that I like...hmm....strange, there are apparently more sounds I HATE then sounds I like:

Alarm Clock
The phone, especially when I'm busy
Door bell
Car alarm
People tapping
Weird laughters

Vacuuming
Drilling, Sawing etc.
Crappy stereos (eg, the ones you hear in some idiot's car stereo 3 in the morning)
People speaking a language when they can't speak properly

That's all, we all agree that these are noises, right?

Heh, other sounds I like?

1. The sound of a car being pushed to redline in first gear.

2. The sound of an F1 race car being pushed near redline in 6th gear.

2. The sound of the tires when a car peels out.

3. Intel's trademark tune for their Pentium processors on commericals

4. The first THX theme in theaters.

5. The silky smooth sound of my 9000ES's loading tray sliding out.

The sound of a racing yacht under spinnaker, surfing down a 15' ocean swell in a 35kt+ breeze... with or without "Born To Be Wild" blasting on the indoor/outdoor Bose units....

Beating to weather with only a dbl. reef in the main and a storm jib up in a 45kt blow, where over 50% of the oceans surface is covered with whitecaps...

Whoa, that's sweet. Details? I might have to get me one of those, although we can't get real blkpowder here.

Well my friend, you really should check out the following:

Lustmord "Heresy"

A colllection of sounds recorded from caves, mineshafts, crypts etc. One of my favourite 'dark ambient' releases. Spooky stuff!
