With his last words I took it he self terminated. What's the chances of his 'battery' running out 5 minutes after saving Deckard?
Pretty good seeing that it's a movie and everyone loves a good ol' deus ex machina
Was it ever made clear what caused them to have a finite lifespan? (in the film I mean, it's been a while since I last saw Blade Runner)

I do recall Roy having the conversation with his 'maker' in which Tyrell says: "The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long, and you have burned so very, very brightly, Roy."

EDIT: and the four year lifespan is mentioned a few times in the film, but I cannot see any explanation of what actually effected that:

Bryant: Nexus 6. Roy Batty. Incept date 2016. Combat model. Optimum self-sufficiency. Probably the leader. This is Zhora. She's trained for an off-world kick-murder squad. Talk about beauty and the beast, she's both. The fourth skin job is Pris. A basic pleasure model. The standard item for military clubs in the outer colonies. They were designed to copy human beings in every way except their emotions. The designers reckoned that after a few years they might develop their own emotional responses. You know, hate, love, fear, anger, envy. So they built in a fail-safe device.
Deckard: Which is what?
Bryant: Four year life span.

So really the reason why Roy passes away minutes after saving Deckard is left up to the viewer's imagination I think? (other than that it works well for the plot/film of course)

Definitely not explicitly but they do explicitly indicate WHY they have 4 year lifespans and it's to prevent emotional development and the resulting lack of controllability. I always assumed they were essentially "biological robots" with completely engineered genomes, so they could "program" a mechanism that would make the organism fail at some point. Blade Runner 2049 sort of punched holes in that though since it sort of implies that kind of "programming" doesn't work...I won't spoil anything for anyone who hasn't seen it (if you haven't seen the OG Blade Runner and you want to cry about spoilers, shut up, the movie is 43 years old).

How about the asian doctor working on eyes , if they were genetically modified beings they'd come into existence complete.

Another reason I think they're androids.

Well, then clearly they should have made it 3 years. :xf_wink:

Now you are making me feel old.

I've never quite got my head around that bit of the storyline. That asian doctor couldn't possibly produce enough eyes for all the "androids", so I always assumed he was developing genetic prototype eyes.

I think that’s what he was doing. 2049 does show they are clearly grown, but then again it’s 40 years in the future from the original Blade Runner.

I'm somewhat embarrassed to admit that I've seen the Ryan Gosling Blade Runner Sequel but not yet the original one - because for whatever reason I confused the original Blade Runner with the original Tron film (of which I haven't seen the "Legacy" sequel yet). Halfway into the film, I wondered why none of the references and story line seemed familiar to me, then I realisied that I had confused the two films... 🙄
Still a good plot twist and good film, though. 😅

Blade Runner is the movie with Dustin Hoffman, a black vampire who runs a marathon. In the end stops an old Nazi in NY from getting the diamonds.

Not Dustin Hoffman  SIGOURNEY WEAVER! and they drove a van looking for ghosts and met a friendly big guy who liked to ride the New York subway who helped a guy over come ptsd as he didn't like making pottery but preferred to make mountains out of mashed potato.

I'm a VFX nerd, so I can go on about what shots in Tron were actual early 3D animation vs "complex" optical camera effect. With 2049, it would be best first to watch the original movie and then the sequel to get the nuance. If even some subtle devices: they do pick up some of the music composition that gives you a positive impression.
