bit of a newbie here.

is it possible to use a portable amp to get around the volume restriction on the sony nwz-a845 and is it also possible to use an lod?

That should work.
The LOD will give you a line out from the player.
The Eq should still work but the volume on the player will not.
The amp will than be what drives your earphones.

The headphone out could drive your amp as well, but you should get better quality from the LOD

A certain member did some measurements, and subjective listening tests say the Sony LOD doesn't really help SQ-wise.

Thanks for the heads up.
I have a LOD for my A828 and i get a good lineout from it.
However i have found a post which is a RMAA test for the A845 and it does say the headphone out is better.
Here is the post.
