Damn would that be sweet. It is coming, we all know it.

And it would be expensive as hell....th900+ high end Bluetooth + reseller = $3-4K easily. However, like I stated, you don't need DAP anymore, a good working smartphone will be fine. So when you look at it this way ? It makes so much senses.

I know I am very interested in ESS 9118 SOC briefs to looking forward to (May-be) a possible prototype out of the THX-00. Would love to have a good electrical engineer on this forum to talk to though, my friends here is not so much into audio, but he can certainly AIDS in making such simple circuitry. If everything works out perfectly, we could then start a kickstart campaign with in alliance with Fostex and Massdrop for the best pricing .

That is to say if we have enough people to be interested in it, after we successes in making a prototype. Well, somone else could have been looking into it already.

At first for sure, but eventually competition and scale of economy will drive prices down. I'm willing to go out on a limb and predict within 5 years we will see flagship Bluetooth offerings that can easily compete with their wired counterparts.

You can't as it require a newer version of Android than what is on ZX2

Had the same problem with audible for audiobooks.  ran fine until it decided it was time for update, now version 2.2 comes up with memory errors.  had to roll back to the 1.7 version to restore functionality.  I suspect that the player will be come hard to support with out OS update (or at least the functionality will be limited to factory installs shortly)

Is there any hard information as to whether Sony is working on a firmware update for the ZX2, or a new TOTL DAP?

In looking for a player, I came to the conclusion that the ZX2 was by far the best quality device and had it added to an online shopping cart on more than one occasion.

In the end though, I went with the Onkyo purely because of its higher Android version and the fact that it was likely to maintain compatibility with apps for longer.

It's a shame that having invested so much effort in a quality hardware design, the Sony device is being shunned for lack of firmware updates.

Are you saying the Sony nw-zx2 will become outdated?

I think it depends on what you want to use it for. If you are loading your own files to internal memory / SD card it will always be a great player and never be outdated.

If you want to use third-party streaming and download apps then it all depends on how long those services support older operating systems. Apple Music is already unavailable. The post above highlights that the latest version of Audible doesn't work, but at least it's possible to roll back to an older version. In general older versions of apps will still work, but if there is some form of security breach with an older app, it may well be disabled. There was a Spotify update some time ago that rendered all earlier versions of the app unusable. If such an update doesn't cater for older operating systems, then they won't work on ZX2.

My concern is that the ZX2 was already two years 'out-of-date' when it was released so the risk of it losing functionality is greater. If I knew that Sony were working on an Android 5 or 6 update however, I'd jump on the first reasonably priced player I could find.

This was the reason for me as well opting for the DP-X1. I literally had the ZX2 in a shopping cart on at least two occasions, all I had to do was click order, but I always hesitated. It isn't that I question the sound quality of the ZX2, that was never in doubt, nor the build quality and UI, but simply looking forward for my needs I preferred a newer version of Android and it was clear that Sony will never update the ZX2, they will issue a new DAP. So either I waited for that, or I found something now, which I did.

Edit: and I also wanted more power than the ZX2 offered. I'm still going to buy one used once I can for around $500 so another year.

Don't put too much hope into it. Sony is not what it used to be, they had announced to kill their Flagship Smartphone Z series. There were so many chances for them to make it right after the Xperia Z3.....everyone kept asking for beefed up Audio quality.....but they were too stubborn. Look at LG-V10 and G5 now, they are so welcomed.

However, Sony will keep up with their mediocre mid level X line.

With so many Walkman devices being released, I am sure they are not even doing that well. Instead of releasing A17/25/Zx100, different and multiple new mid-low level headphones, they could have been focused onto the Zx2, and Zx200 ? And keep on with their Flagship Audio products such as Z7 ?

The only thing doing so well now is PS4 and Camera sensors

1) Xperia X series is not a mid line. It's the new single serie that carries entry, mid and high end smartphones.

2) What makes you think they don't? :)

Dont make asumptions when you dont know ;)
