Ladies and gentlemen, I don’t think I was going to post this, but allow me to. The Walkmans and S-Master are unique, and in a sense, whatever you considered “Bits Perfect” are meaningless to the systems. The only matters is how the systems are interpreting and converting your digital info’s into music.

All PCM will go through PWM and during this phase, there can be different stages of Digital Signal Processings being applied…pre and post digital amplifications….how it is done…etc. the only way to stay bit perfect term as you have heard and been hearing with Walkmans and S-Master is to use DSD. Please mind that DSD is 1 bit and not multi-bit. So we are back at square 1, it doesn’t matter about bits perfect term.

How will Sony deal with Android SRC and battery, or output power and Android updates are another issues.

The AK SP2K cannot do PCM to DSD

But A&K software and hardware are usually almost obsolete evey time.. and A&K developers are almost never able to fix issues of their software.
I would never imagine comparing Sony and A&K ..

1. I was only comparing size and weight of these 2 TOTL DAPS
2. I know that you had a very negative experience with an A&K (Kann Alpha) but this is not my case, I own a SP2000 and it's working perfectly, I don't have a single bug, firmware is regularly updated

I think a big part of it is Sony is in the smartphone business. Xperia 5 iii would easily last 50+ hours just playing audio. They can surely take the same battery technology and sources and just adapt it for the walkman.

While other DAP makers just don't have the pedigree. Astell & Kern is tiny compared to Sony, they dont have an entire smartphone arm to draw expertise from on battery efficiency etc. Hence AK make DAPs with 8 hour battery life in 2022, while Sony made DAPs with 20+ hour battery life in 2016. Even chord can't squeeze more than 10 hours on their portables....Sony really stands out in this regard and are poised to take the DAP market almost entirely from AK this generation imo.

But Sony are the only ones using a low power 'digital' amp/dac. They ditched it themselves when designing the DMP-Z1 in favour of 2 x AK4497 and analog amp. I can get 32 hours from my rooted hiby R8 with the right kernel tweaks and still have fast performance. I could cripple it down to the speed of a sony and still have the more powerful amp and maybe surpass 40 hours.

Assume SE still supports TRRS (in addition to TRS)….

Only option I would like to see is USB-C Analog-Out so a USB-C Microphone can be used as Analog-In to record without the (assumed) built-in mic.

@nanaholic you say sony has no new S-Master chip yet. What about the new S-Master chip inside SA-Z1? Made with GaN-FET instead of MOSFET
