Sony MDR MA900 Impressions Thread

The A2 is great with the ma900. But the ma900 is too sensitive with any of the vintage gear. Both the hd650 and MD sound better on the lyr with good tubes than with the A2 and even better on vintage steel.

I have not hear the mojo.

@MattTCG, i see you have the gr07. I just wanted to know how they sound compared to your ma900. I wanted to step into the iem world but i don't know how the transition from the very open ma900 will be lol.

I think a lot of the gr07 mkii first off. The sound signature will certainly be in the ballpark of the ma900. Of course the ma900 will have that wonderful sound stage that the gr07 just can't compete with. The mids on gr07 are as good if not a little better than the Sony.

What the vsonic does so well, is an almost liquid transition between bass, mids and treble. I refer to it as coherence but don't no if my terms are correct.

I would feel safe saying that if you like the Sony you'll like the vsonic. Whether or not you find the vsonic comfortable is up to you.

Just curious by the way if anyone here has owned both the ma900s and the hd600s and can say whether the ma900s have things that it can do better than the senns.

EDIT: I just saw Astroid's post. Anyone else with hd600s to add a second opinion?

I've had the hd600 before I settled into the 650. It still comes down to supreme comfort and expansive sound stage. Very few hp's including the Senn's just can't compete. The Senn's will win on richness, intimacy and layered sound.

Another headier told me that once he got the ma900 he quite listening to the hd800.

 If you can believe it.

beyerdynamic pads  from the dt770,880,990 should all fit being that they are based on the same cup size.. I tried out my beyer gel pads on the headset and it worked/fit. my he400 pads also fit this headset but in the end the stock pads still sounded the best to me..

Hi Guys,

Is it a good idea to use an amp for then MA900? I'm using a macbook air and thinking of either buying the JDS Labs O2 Combo or the Schiit Audio Magni+modi combo..

If the sound is not better by a significant amount, then I rather not spend another $300 on accessories after just buying a $200 headphone.

I like them just fine off the Fiio e17. Actually, even more than the Compass 2. The E17 added a nice warmth to the bass, where the Compass 2 was a bit TOO strict and refined, and didn't make it as fun. A portable amp would definitely be enough.

The Magni may have too much gain for the MA900, so you won't have much area on the volume control for the MA900, unless you lower PC volume.

Ah, I see, I'll test out the FiiO E17 with the MA900 after they arrive.

Thank you for your help!

I'm sure there are better options for you, but I do happen to own the E17 and MA900 and I'm quite happy with that combo, even if it was my only setup. It was wild to see me unplug the E12 off the E17, since I found the E12 a bit leaner sounding, but faster. I think if neutrality was a target, the MA900 did sound better and sharper/tighter on the E12 and Compass 2. But I found it more enjoyable and musical off the E17, and still very well balanced. I like just having an easy setup of laptop - E17 - MA900, rather than the mess of cables with the laptop - e17 - e12 - MA900

I owned the Magni/Modi, and the Magni was great, but it really did have too much gain for sensitive headphones like the MA900. Schiit should've added a gain switch even if it added to the cost.

I think even off the macbook alone, you'll be happy with the MA900. It sounds great off even a smartphone.

I can second this opinion, the E17 is a great partner with the MA900.

^^ I agree. I'll add that the fiio x3, which I find to be a modest improvement on the e17, sounds great with the ma900.

Nevermind I figured out my own question, a new firmware update does allow the x3 to act like a usb dac. It may not technically be out yet it seems.

That's cool, maybe it will supersede the e17 quality wise in this aspect.

Kind of offtopic sorry. I would be interested in using the x3 with the ma900 in usb dac mode and see how it does any chance you could try that matt ?
