Sony MDR MA900 Impressions Thread

I would echo your sentiments above with the exception of the sound stage on the ma900. It clearly and appreciable betters that of my hd650 which should be the same as your hd600. It's not even close, so I'm somewhat surprised by that comment.

I didn't mention that the HD600 has better soundstage in my comment. Maybe you are right that the MA900 has better soundstage than the HD600. I no longer have the HD600 so I can't do a direct comparison.

You are correct. Sorry about that. I misread your post.

I own both MA900 & HD600 as well. I find the MA900 a little bright to my ears, missing some sub bass but for the rest they are pretty good for the price!
They are very comfortable & light on my head. Soundstage is very good, in comparison HD600 sounds much more intimate.
HD600 mids are untouchable though

LOL...we have the opposite take on them. I don't hear any brightness, but rather smoother slightly dark treble. They are less intimate than the hd6xx for me.

We do agree about the mids on the hd6xx.

There is some glariness in the upper mids which can make some (only a few) instruments sound harsh, or stand out more than others, but the MA900 is in no way a bright headphone.

Some of the posts recently in this and other threads remind me that:

* Everyone's ears are physically different, so that comfortable for one person is not for another person, and bright for one person is not for another person (just differences in ear shape can cause differences in frequency response from person to person).

* I really think that a number of people do not have various headphones positioned on their head in a way that is best for the sound of the headphones.   I remember that in one case, someone called Dan (Mad Dog headphones) and on the phone, he had them change the position to one that correctly produced satisfying bass.  I expect this happens with other headphones.   (I hope everyone has noticed the L and R marks on the MA900 !)

By the way, I would call the MA900 "very lightweight and so easy to wear" rather than "comfortable".  As suggested by another poster earlier in the thread, the Senn HD590 are probably the most "comfortable" headphones ever.  They were lighter than most - although heavier than the MA900s - had exceptionally right design for fitting nicely on the head, and extremely comfy pads with relatively low clamping force.   Definitely too little bass though.

That's how I feel about the MA900 at times, seems a bit bright at times sometimes due the upper midrange glare, other times I don't notice it and find them perfectly smooth up top. To be honest I find the mids a bit bloated on the MA900, I find my K612 simply destroys the MA900 in the midrange, it's not even close. The MA900 is a great headphone for the price and does some things very well but it's flaws show their face when compared to more neutral headphones.

maybe MA900 are highly source-dependent, I'm using HRT microstreamer to drive them which is known to be on the cold side
My other headphones are Mad Dogs, HD600 & 225i, to my ears MA900 are brighter than MD & HD600 but nothing like Grado of course (which are closed to impossible to listen with the HRTs)
MA900 have the best soundstage among the crowd

The headphones present the vocals as if it's only you and the singer. mid centric but at the same time relaxed

Ah, i see. It could be because of the MA900's very large soundstage that It sounds less intimate than other headphones , right ?
