Sony MDR-1AM2 - Impressions Thread

Longtime MDR1AM2 user here. I've mostly been using wireless gear lately and these are the my last wired-only headphones. I never thought of them as bright or fatiguing until recently. Back then I more enjoyed the Audio-Technica house sound which was brighter (like the MSR7 and M50x), but nowadays I prefer something with a W shape. The Soundcore Liberty 3 Pro is quite comparable sonically though. Both have a W-shape with deep bass and bright highs. The Liberty 3 Pro has deeper bass and has another bump in the upper mids (a bit more W-shaped), but the overall character is quite similar.

I recall reading the 1AM2 has the same drivers as the WH1000XM3 but the added electronics and ANC colour the sound differently. I haven't tried them in detal but I recall seeing some comments that only the 1000XM4 and 1000XM5 come closer to the 1AM2 in detail.

From my testing, the XM3s are absolutely terrible in comparison. While the 1am2 s have this surrounding deep bass, the XM3s present it in a boomy and boxy fashion which overshadows the mids. They sound pretty muddy overall when using them with no EQ features.

The XM5s however, I find a more competent competitor to the 1am2, while I still like the clarity and space that the 1am2 offers, the deeper and more richer laid back sound of the XM5s is enjoyable when I want to relax. Both are significantly better than the XM3s and XM4s to my taste.

Well, long time mdr 1am2 user here, bout 4+ years, pads completely died, drivers were very dirty.

Did some work, broke the plastic to clean the driver, took the pads from my faulty heavys headphones, my brother sewed em to the detachable earcup part.. viola!

Since I bought the mdr mv1 (soon to arrive) I'll be giving my old mdr 1am2 to my lil bro.

Does the 3.5 to USB C adapter lose audio quality?

It's what I use when I go out, although I have the a55, I love the a55 that I'm afraid of losing or having it stolen haha, just enjoy mp3 music.
