These NEED to be paired with this……they’re UNREAL then !
Lol I think you might want to up the level in your headphone game if you're using an $8500 amp.

that cable looks gorgeous

I buy my cables from a US seller & I know I’m going to get the name wrong, off the top off my head…..had to check…..iqicables. ( but no mention of the player ! ? LOL )

You may very well laugh, but have you heard this combo ? Clearly not ! I have the Sony MDR-Z1R’s which surprisingly aren’t a good match & I have other more expensive headphones than the 1AM2’s, but I return to them every time & have clocked up 840 hours of listening in just under 4 months.

The DMP-Z1 makes even budget headphones, unworldly !

A Creative SXFI USB-C stick just arrived, it's on discount right now from 150€ to 50€ on Creative Store, works flawless with my Xiaomi Mi10T Pro. Listening on Apple Music Lossless Master right now on my MDR-1AM2, it's sounds damned good, and that is without the SXFI effect which I'm not really interested in. Crystal clear is a cliché, but that is how it sounds :)

The SXFI stick is a quite potent headamp, with the AKM4377 32 bit/384kHz(limited to 24/96 in this case because the built in DSP works in 24/96) DAC and ample output to drive even 600 Ohm headphones. Audiosciencereview.com found that it measures very good, so it's not empty specs. I think it is a bargain.

This little guy, the SXFI amp, does incredibly well also using PC as source. Using the MDR-Z7 curve in the SXFI control app. Powerful sound, and ultra clean.

Would someone be able to provide a comparison between these and the M40x? I'm looking to find a replacement. Thanks.

Its a completely different tuning. One is a warm V shaped headphone the other is neutral.

If your preference is neutral, you won't like the Sony mdr-1am2

The M40x is slightly V-shaped no?

I had a friend help me do a blind test when I was at the AT store between the M50x and M40x. I preferred the M40x, the M50x was too bassy and muddled. If the MDR 1AM2 is comparable to the M50x then you're probably right, I won't like them.

Yes, MDR-1AM2 sounds a little like "loudness always on", it's made for enjoying music and are far from a monitoring headphone. With that said, it's very high resolving and extreme clean sounding not at all "muddy" and sounds "fun" even with classical music. It's scales a lot with gear though, it's not impressive with the average consumer headphone out.

I agree with you. I tried Meze 99C and Audio Technica ATH-MSR7b equalized, the Sony MDR 1AM2 on my V200 and dac schiit, sounded much better. Better to switch to other headphones if you plan to connect the 1AM2s on a smartphone or direct PC.

I plan to use it with a BTR3K to make it kind of wireless. I guess that'll give it a decent SQ boost.

I tried the small SXFI stick with my MDR-Z7M2, it CAN drive them to high level, but with a lot more effort than the MDR-1AM2. I need to raise the volume from 30 to 55 in Windows 11 for the same perceived volume. Comparably, MDR-1AM2 is obvious much easier to drive.

How does it sound? MDR-Z7M2 is more refined and effortless in it's presentation, and soundstage is larger, but it is not as lively and "fun" as MDR-1AM2. The sound is very very clean. Z7M2 is more "HiFi", and 1AM2 is more Rock and Roll LoL :)

M40x is pretty neutral.

I have aftermarket ear pads tho, can't remember exactly what it sounded like stock. i just remember sharp treble and no bass in stock form.

Just got a new sealed one for 90€ and they pair with the iFi Go Blue perfectly, I've been looking for a good closedback for quite some time and bought the DT700 Pro X and the Sony at the same time and weirdly enough i like both of them, different tunning and different use. Great little gem.

Edit: been playing with AutoEQ and setting it in Wavelet at 65-75 % makes it work for me.
