Sony MDR-1000X

There's a BT volume bug with the A25. no matter how loud you set it, it still remains low. Suspect it's because it uses an older protocol which doesn't negotiate properly with the headphone (3.0 vs 4.0), but honestly, I dunno. It was one of the things that made me steer clear of it when I was trying it out in the store.

On my smartphone, it's ridiculously loud at the 50% mark for BT (as in, any louder and I'll get ringing).

The so called 'creaking' is back, I had only one day without. It slowly started occurring on Saturday and today it is almost with very same rate as in previous pair.

I filled up a manufacturer contact form on Amazon website asking if Sony knows about this problem etc. Meanwhile, the grey version (on amazon.co.uk) became 'currently unavailable' - it is not the same as 'out of stock'. For some reason it has been decided not to sell it, whereas the black version is out of stock till 5th of December.

These headphones would be perfect for me if it wasn't for creaking.

My 100ABN squeaks and I have seen other reports of the same issue in its thread. It's a bit annoying but not so much I won't use the headphone. Having said that until I have to send the Sennheiser PXC550 back I have grown to prefer it over the 100ABN because it doesn't have this issue at all and it's more comfortable. Signature wise ABN has a bit more bass punch while the 550 has stronger mids and a bit of an upper mid lower treble peak. That peak has not bothered me and I gave the HP 4.5/5 but Tyll's review thought it was to strong.

The squeaky annoys the hell out of me, not because it's very annoying, but because it's the only thing keeping me giving these a 10/10 score.
Yesterday I had them on while doing tasks in the house (one of my use cases, more often than travel/commute) and before that I sat a bit and listened to a few tracks Z1R<>1000X and the 1000X managed really really well considering they were competing with a unit costing 6x more

In terms of sound quality, they are pretty good.... pretty good for Wireless/NC that is, but still very very acceptable even for normal listening.

Another unfortunate plus I have with these things is that for the first time in decades, the earpads seem to have been custom-designed based on my ears. It's just the right diameter and shape. Not too big, there's no sliding, no wobbly vagueness in centering like on the huge HD800S, but they don't put pressure on the ears, it's just the right diameter and shape. Which means, an awesome seal with great comfort.

So I want to keep them, but the plastic noise is such a turn-off in a really nice unit. It makes the whole offering feel cheap and it is annoying even when you're listening in lazy mode on the couch, let alone in cases when you have to move more.

I do have to say that they are squeaking a lot less now than when I got them, as if some edges wore out and there's less friction. The opposite of what one usually encounters. Still, they will never feel solid and quiet. So.. not fully decided on the keep/return yet.

Well, the squeak returned. Bloody hell. It's squeaking on the right now rather than the left. I love every aspect of these headphones except the squeaking is just bloody unbearable. I stretch my jaws a bit, it squeaks. I move my head a bit, it squeaks. This is even without glasses.

I'm going to try the Sennheiser PXC550 again, as I've never tried the two side-by-side. If the PXC550 is even close, I'm offing these. It's bad enough one of them had to be returned, but another one? Come on, Sony, up your game!

I think Sony's only headphone that didn't have any squeaking is the 7506 which now resides in my digital piano for private practice. My 2nd replacement hasn't squeaking/crackling yet, but I handle it like how one handles bang snaps.

Hi kabayan!  Glad to hear that your replacement don't have the "creaking" issue, sad to hear about the others though.

FYI for all, I've just been contacted by my Sony store to ask if I still have the issue and I said yes, I've put some powder and some tape to reduce the noise but it's still there (see my previous post).  They said that some Sony people or official/s are already informed of this issue and that they are gathering more info/complaints to fix this.  I've given this thread's URL as my reference and they can search for "creak" or "squeak" to narrow down.

Really hope they get this fixed soon so the MDR-1000x can have my 10/10 rating.

Will all units eventually get creaking due to wear and tear? Has anyone not had creaking out of the box only for it to occur a month or two after? There's a demo at my local Best Buy that's probably only been there for a few months but it's already creaking a lot.

Don't know if it will be on sale for VIP sale or Black Friday... Last year the MDR-100AAP was released around this time and had no price drop despite them saying "All Sony Headphones on sale."

Out of the box, both units were fine. It was only after a few days that the creaking got progressively worse. Tried some dry lube around the folding and swivelling parts, no joy. Then again, I wasn't expecting it to: it's more an issue of misaligned plastics being stressed.

In my case they actually got less creaky with use. Out of the box they cracked like poporn, those sounds you hear in the video I posted.
Lately they do it less, I suspect because some joints/plastics contact less. But common sense would say that with more usage they will probably end up getting noisier, one way or the other.

I used them this weekend and the noise was almost gone (couldn't make it snap just by clenching my jaw like before) but it is still there if one moves. Given that they're wireless and made to be on the move, it's still an issue.

Next Sunday is my last day to return them.  I'm still happy in general, but not sure if I can live with the noise when I think I paid 315 EUR for them. They they had cost 100, perhaps.

Just got my MDR 100X three days ago.
I went back and forth between Bose QC35 and the Sony's. Decided on the Sony's and glad I did. Bose had a different sound. I could here no mids and highs were very bright and fatiguing. Overall better balanced sound from Sony.
No signs of squeaking or creaking after three days.
I have not posted on this forum for about 10 years. My headphone collection has included the following: Grados, Sennheisers, Ultimate ears, Shure in ears etc., Audio Technica M50X, and all the other ones bought and sold that I can't remember.

In my opinion I think the Sony's have a sound signature and frequency range very similar to the Audio Technica M50X, except the Sony's are a little warmer with a touch more bass. I'm liking them better than the M50X and they offer so much more!

I can't differentiate any sound differences with NC on or OFF, or wired with power on with and without NC.
Touchpad features are very good. I see complaints about them, I don't know why. The only issue I had was play/pause double tap, but I soon learned I was tapping too fast. Both taps should take about 1/2 second, which is actually a nice steady pace.

Listening to mostly 320kbs files on iPhone 6

Highly recommended
